The Indian education system has its strong points but the pundits do not want to move with the times. The central Board and the State Boards have brought in changes which in the long run are proving detrimental to the young Indians. This opinion has become stonger in relation to the recent IIT admissions. Several articles in the national Dailies have highlighted the fact that seats are lying vacant in IITs because students are withdrawing or simply not taking admission in IIT.
Edit Steps
- 1This malaise is not a sudden development. It had been brewing and it takes root from the very first step that a child takes in a school. At the risk of sounding archaic, it is encouraged in children to avoid writing, to understand a topic or subject at the conceptual level. I am in the field of education and i am appalled by the quality of teachers, and their covert encouragement to children to even try and learn by rote the steps in subjects like math, Physics and Chemistry. The Indian education system remeinds me of a very poorly edited film with all the ingredients in it but with no clue of the proportion in which each ingredient should be added to the receipe. For, this to be corrected the educationists should stop looking at others (countries) for guidance. They should not forget the it is mostly the past generations of Indians who are enjoying the fruits of labour, being educated in the now vilified education system. Not that i am advocating the previous system in its entirety but we are definitely better off in terms of knowledge of a particular subject.
- 2Just turn on the TV to any of the youth channels and one can realise the level of dumbing down that has become epidemic and the future generation has no qualms.
- 3Instead of Reality TV for singing and dancing, making millionaires of Indians asking most innane quiz questions, please wake up India and exercise the grey cells and have ambitions of becoming inventors, doctors, scientists too.Earning moolah with hard work.
- 4Teachers are refraining from homework or creative assignments to avoid correcting the answers or projects. It should be made compulsory for the teachers to show some proof in way of feed back from parents about their contribution to writing skills of students. An hour of parent-teacher is not the answer. Individual case study is required and the teachers have enough time to do so.
- 5During Board exams kids try to read only those portions of a chapter which has a likelihood of being a part of the question papers.
- 6Now, efforts are being made to ban reference books of teachers and mentors who make money by writing "Key Book' as it is popularly called in India.
- 7All the Help-lines being set up to help children cope with Board exams is a new phenomenon in India. This would most likely not be required if the students with proper guidance from teachers would understand the importance of long term and continued learning.
- 8To remain in the ivy league advantage that Indians have earned at the international level, whether as scientists, mathematicians, social scientists and inventors, financial gurus, it is essential that educational institutes like IITs, IIMs, NID and other institutions of international repute be given further impetus to identify students and Indians from other walks of life to get education in such instutes if seats are available to them.
- 9There are several citizens who for various reasons could not continue with the choice of their education, or the subject of their choice,it definitely was not due to the lack of merit.
- 10So, if Mr. NIlenkeri could find himself to be part of a government endeavour due to his talent then why cannot an ordinary Indian who has the capability be allowed to avail of this opportunity.
- 11He or she should not be written off due to the age factor or the fact that he or she could not continue with science in Plus Two i.e. school graduation.
- 12In fact, the Indian Prime minister had spoken about the Tube transfer method between the private and government sector.
- 13The short cut and spoon feeding method of education in India needs to be thought about and the solutions have to come from within the system and not only from the time serving beauracrats and their political mentors, who more often than not have nothing to do with education.
- 14The quality of teachers has got nothing to do with a B.eD. The so-called training that is needed should be done only if the candidate has the prerequisite quality of knowledge of the subject, communication skills, dedication towards the profession. Not as a source of making pocket money. In an english medium school a teacher cannot be appointed if he/she is incapable of speaking or writing even a simple sentence in the medium of education. They can be hired in vernacular schools which are as good. This trend has negatively impacted the students in their written as well as spoken communication skills.
- 15These are the reasons which have are affecting the resource pool in the job market. The lucrative IT and ITEs sector in India is waiting to implode because as has been pointed out in the past the professional skills of the Indian work force is 'wanting' on several levels. Other countries are already taking over India. So, the warning bell has been sounding loud and clear for the Corporate honchos.
- 16In short merit, talent, resourceful traits that can be inculcated in the most populated country (in future)on the planet needs to find the best of the past and of the present and of the future to come up with a dynamic education system which would continue to provide to the Indian brain drain and empower us all.
