Teach Children Liberal Values

So, you want to teach your children liberal values. The times are much more liberal then they previously were, and you want to prepare them with a set of values that you feel prepares them for the world. This guide will tell you how to incorporate them into daily conversations, into serious conversation, politics, and other social circumstances.

    First understand what you want to teach. What beliefs do you want to incorporate into your system of values?
    • The basic beliefs of liberalism, according to wikipedia, are human rights, Free and fair elections, Multiparty democracy, social justice, tolerance, social market economy, free trade, environmental sustainability, and a leftist political stand-point.

    Start from a young age. Talk about the right and wrong in our society. Tell them what you feel is okay and not okay. Make this very clear and definite.
    • Children need structure. Incorporate these morals and values into structured activities.

    Ask for their opinion on things. Free-will is highly regarded. The best you can do is teach them what you feel is right, and hope that they will makes use of these teaching in some way.

    Reinforce the idea with social interactions with like-minded people. When you hear more than one person saying something is correct, or can give a good argument, an older child will see this as a sign of leadership and also as validation to your statements.

    Answer questions truthfully. You know what you want to teach your children. If they have questions, be prepared to answer.
    • Remember, there is no correct answer. This is only from your personal standpoint.

    Preach open mindedness, tolerance, and humanitarian beliefs. With a strong basis of these beliefs, it supports any liberal teaching.

    When having a serious conversation, use words that indicate morality. You may mention that you believe that a certain subject is morally wrong. Make this very clear. In these serious situations, a person is very easily influenced. Make the best of these opportunities.

    Educate your child on the world of politics. Talk about what politics are, and how they influence you. Apply this to what ever moral system you go by.
    • Tell them both sides of the story. They will tell you which on they like more, and then you can, if you find the need, to discuss more on the subject and why you think it is right or wrong. Freedom of expression is extremely important.

    Be tolerant yourself. If your child doesn't want to follow these values, be ready to accept that. The basis of liberalism is tolerance. Be tolerant of your child's decisions.
