There are many people living in big cities that have never experienced living in smaller villages in the countryside or by the sea. This wikiHow will explain some of the steps to being local.
Edit Steps
- 1Say hello to everyone you see, whether it's on a brief trip to the shop, walking to your car or just hanging up your washing. It shows that you are local and also a friendly person.
- 2Claim a pub. You can do this by sampling the local pubs and then sticking to the one you prefer (or the one closest to your house). You can then meet more locals at the pub, and if you get on first-name basis with the bar staff that makes you more local, too.
- 3Gossip with your neighbors. This helps test your local knowledge and can also reveal some local secrets and things you wouldn't normally know.
- 4Offer to help elderly people with their gardening.
- 5Get involved in community activities, such as garage sales, art shows, picnics, etc. Look for the free things to do and go,meet great people and say hello, maybe get to know one or two enough to find more community things to do.
- 6Walk around the neighborhood a lot -- you'll meet more of your neighbors that way.
- 7Pick up litter as you walk around: neighbors will see that you care about the area.
- 8As much as possible, buy the products and services of neighborhood businesses to learn more about the area as well as help it economically.
- 9Read the free, weekly papers (usually out on Thursdays) that give all the dates of upcoming events and gatherings in the town. This introduces you to the "vibe" of the community.
