How to Defend Against a Front Kick
Edited by Carl_001, Scott Hanson, Ben Rubenstein, Cem and 11 others
This is a basic kick defense used often in Aikido and is not very difficult to do.
Edit Steps
-
1Take a ready stance with both hands out in front.Ad
-
2Get out of the line of the kick; do this by moving to his/her blindside (outside).
-
3Catch the attacker's leg with your right forearm and keep it suspended off the ground, thus they are very unbalanced.
-
4Push them over with your left arm and they will fall; you may also simultaneously push their attacking leg up to help with the throw.
- Alternatively, when they are unbalanced, simply side kick them in the back of the knee for them to collapse.
EditDodge and Strike
-
1Dodge the kick, sidestep quickly while keeping the back stance strong.
-
2When you are still at the attacker's side, this is your chance to strike. You can choose a punch, knifehand, ridgehand, pretty much anything.
-
3Strike the attacker in the area below the ribcage or on the jugulary vein on the neck.
-
4While the attacker is falling, kick down on him in a quick fashion.Ad

Edit Tips
- If you are flexible enough (or have long enough legs) you can also kick your opponents other leg out from under him/her after grabbing the kicking leg.
- After executing the throw, it is wise to apply a pin to fully incapacitate your attacker. However, just the fall should be enough to put them out of action.
- Be sure to practice this technique before using it in a self-defense situation
