  Delmarva Foundation Excellence Award Recognizes Performance in Key Clinical Areas

  Delmarva Foundation for Medical Care, the Medicare Quality Improvement Organization for Maryland, has awarded the 2013 Delmarva Foundation Excellence Award for Quality Improvement to the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC).  The award honors hospitals which excel in patient safety and quality improvement.
  

• University of Maryland Doctors Selected as Super Doctors®

  The University of Maryland Medical Center is proud to announce that 70 of our doctors are Super Doctors® Rising Stars, a new listing of up-and-coming doctors in the Washington, DC/Baltimore area. These “Rising Stars” have about 10 years of post residency experience. Super Doctors has a rigorous screening process to identify these doctors who have reached a high degree of peer recognition as well as professional achievement. The list appeared in the April 28, 2013 issue of The Washington Post Sunday Magazine.

  UMMC's Lisa Rowen and Mrianne Rowan-Braun Among "Maryland's Top 100 Women" name by The Daily Record

  3/4/2013 - Two exceptional leaders at the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) have been named to The Daily Record's list of "Maryland's Top 100 Women" for 2013. Lisa Rowen, D.N.Sc., R.N., Senior Vice President of Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer, and Marianne Rowan-Braun, Vice President and Director of the Campaign for Shock Trauma, were selected by an outside panel of business leaders based on professional accomplishment, community involvement and commitment to mentoring. Having received this honor two previous times, Lisa Rowen now also becomes a "Circle of Excellence" inductee.

  UMMC Web Sites Win Three eHealthcare Leadership Awards

  11/14/2012 - The Web sites for the University of Maryland Medical Center and Greenebaum Cancer Center won a combined three eHealthcare Leadership Awards. This prestigious awards competition, sponsored by eHealthcare Strategy & Trends, recognized the UMMC Web site with gold awards for Best Health/Healthcare Content, and Best Rich Media, which focuses on video, audio podcasts, virtual tours and multimedia content. UMGCC won a silver award for Best Healthcare Content in the Hospital Subsite/Center of Excellence Category.

  UMMC Receives 2012 Trailblazer Award

  11/14/2012 - The University of Maryland Medical Center received two awards at the Maryland Hospitals for a Healthy Environment’s (MD H2E) fifth annual Environmental Excellence in Health Care Conference at the University of Maryland School of Nursing in Baltimore, held on November 14, 2012. One is MD H2E's Trailblazer award for a program to educate new mothers on the health risks of pesticides. The other award, from the Integrated Pest Management in Health Care Facilities Project, honors UMMC for using a "green approach" in pest management.

  Leapfrog Top Hospital

  12/4/2012 - For the seventh year in a row, the Leapfrog Group has named UMMC as one of the nation’s best hospitals for patient safety and quality of care. UMMC is one of only two hospitals in the country -- and the only hospital on the East Coast -- to make the list every year since its inception in 2006. The Leapfrog Group's national survey measures hospital performance in a range of areas including patient care outcomes, use of best practices and patient safety initiatives and measures of efficiency.

  Record Number of UM Physicians Named Baltimore Magazine "Top Doctors"

  10/25/2012 -An all-time high 98 University of Maryland doctors, all members of the UM School of Medicine faculty, were recognized as "Top Doctors" in Baltimore Magazine's November issue. These doctors are listed below by specialty. The results are based on a Baltimore Magazine survey of nearly 10,000 physicians in the Baltimore area, including Baltimore City and the surrounding seven counties, asking where they would send a member of their family in dozens of specialties. The University of Maryland Medical Center has more doctors on the list than any other hospital.

  UMMC President and CEO Jeffrey A. Rivest Among The Daily Record's 2012 "Maryland's Most Admired CEOs"

  7/31/2012 - The Daily Record has named University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) President and CEO Jeffrey A. Rivest among the recipients of the 2012 “Maryland's Most Admired CEOs” awards. Rivest is recognized in the category for nonprofits with more than $10 million in annual revenue. The Daily Record created the Most Admired CEOs award to recognize some of the most notably talented CEOs leading the state's nonprofit, for profit and public companies. The winners were selected based on their demonstration of strong leadership, integrity, values, vision, commitment to excellence, financial performance and ongoing commitment to their communities and diversity.

  U.S. News & World Report Ranks UMMC as a 2012 "Best Hospital" in Nine Speciality Areas

  7/17/2012 - The University of Maryland Medical Center is recognized among the nation's best hospitals in nine specialty areas in the U.S. News & World Report's 2012 "Best Hospitals" list. U.S. News & World Report evaluated approximately 5,000 medical centers across the United States to rank the top 50 in 16 different adult specialties from cancer to urology.

  UMMC Named One of 100 Great Hospitals in the U.S.; CEO Jeffrey A. Rivest Named One of Top 100 Hospital Executives

  5/25/2012 - Becker's Hospital Review has recognized the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) as one of “100 Great Hospitals to Know” for 2012. In addition, UMMC President and CEO Jeffrey A. Rivest has been named to Becker’s list of “100 Leaders of Great Hospitals.” The hospitals acknowledged by Becker’s “have demonstrated greatness through clinical accolades, innovation in care delivery, recent capital developments, and the offering of new services, specialty programs or technology.” Criteria for the list includes contributions to the history of American healthcare, noteworthy accomplishments in 2011 and continued strides in 2012.

  12/6/2011 - For a sixth year in a row, the Leapfrog Group has named UMMC as one of the nation’s best hospitals for patient safety and quality of care. UMMC is one of only two hospitals nationwide to have met Leapfrog's criteria each year since 2006. The Leapfrog Group's national survey measures hospital performance in a range of areas including patient care outcomes, use of best practices and patient safety initiatives and measures of efficiency.

  UMMC Nurse Receives Environmental Health Award

  11/10/2011 - UMMC Sustainability Manager Denise Choiniere received the first annual Nursing Leadership in Environmental Health Award from Maryland Hospitals for a Healthy Environment at their annual Environmental Excellence in Health Care Conference. Choiniere was recognized for spearheading environmental initiatives at UMMC, including a hazardous pharmaceutical waste management program, Earth Day events, and a weekly farmers' market.

  Helping Youth Develop Skills on the Job Earns UMMC an "Employer of Distinction" Award from The Arc Baltimore and Baltimore Business Journal

  10/1/2011 - In 2010, UMMC began participating in Project SEARCH, an Arc-sponsored program that provides training, education and future employment to Baltimore City Public Schools high-school students with disabilities. UMMC has since hired four of these young adults as full- or part-time staff members after they completed a transitional training program. In recognition of this successful partnership, The Arc joined with the Baltimore Business Journal to honor UMMC with an "Employer of Distinction" award in October 2011, along with two other Baltimore-area employers. The award was created to honor companies that have demonstrated that employing people with developmental disabilities has contributed to their company's success.

  Nine UMMC Programs Make 2011 U.S. News "Best Hospitals" List

  7/19/2011 - UMMC's cancer, cardiology and heart surgery, diabetes and endocrinology, ear, nose and throat, geriatrics, , nephrology, orthopaedics, pulmonology and urology programs are among the 50 best in the country according to the U.S. News and World Report's annual "Best Hospitals" survey.

  UMMC Wins National Environmental Excellence Award

  4/7/2011 - Practice Greenhealth, an organization of dedicated to environmentally responsible practices at large health care facilities, awarded UMMC a "Partner for Change, with Distinction, Award." UMMC staff accepted the award in April at the annual global conference, CleanMed2011, in Phoenix, Arizona. The Medical Center has previously won the "Partner for Change Award." This year, the award comes "with distinction" - a higher level that recognizes a greater level of action and results.

  UMMC Named a Top Hospital of the Decade for Patient Safety and Quality by the Leapfrog Group

  12/1/2010 - UMMC is one of only two U.S. hospitals named a Top Hospital of the Decade for patient safety and quality of care by the Leapfrog Group. The award recognizes the medical center's inclusion on the Leapfrog Top Hospital list every year since its inception in 2006. The Leapfrog Group's national survey is the only national, public comparison of hospitals on key issues including preventing medication errors and infections and standards for performing high-risk procedures.

  UMMC Receives Gold Award from the American Heart Association as a Fit-Friendly Company for Third Straight Year

  11/23/2010 - The American Heart Association has recognized UMMC with the Start! Fit-Friendly Company Gold Level Award for the third straight year for its efforts to promote the health of its employees. The award recognizes UMMC's creating a culture of physical activity in the workplace and promoting a wellness culture by providing support to employees and implementing physical, nutritional and cultural changes.

  UMMC Receives 2010 Trailblazer Award

  11/19/2010 - The University of Maryland Medical Center is the recipient of a 2010 Trailblazer Award from Maryland Hospitals for a Healthy Environment (MDH2E). The award, which was presented to the Medical Center at the MDH2E annual conference on Thursday, November 18, 2010 at the University of Maryland School of Nursing, recognizes the innovativeness the Medical Center's new pharmaceutical waste program.

  UMMC's Cardiac Care Unit Earns Critical Care Nursing Excellence Award for Second Consecutive Year

  11/9/2010 - For the second consecutive year, the Cardiac Care Unit (CCU) at the University of Maryland Medical Center has received the Beacon Award for Critical Care Excellence from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses. This award goes to intensive care nursing units that have met rigid criteria for excellence, exhibit high-quality standards and provide exceptional care to patients and their families.

  7/16/2010 - UMMC's cancer, diabetes and endocrinology, ear, nose and throat, geriatrics, heart and heart surgery, kidney disorders, orthopaedics, pulmonology and urology programs are among the 50 best in the country according to the U.S. News and World Report's annual "Best Hospitals" survey.

  UMMC Wins Two Awards for Environmental Excellence from Practice Greenhealth

  5/12/2010 - UMMC was presented with two awards from Practice Greenhealth, a national membership organization for health care facilities committed to environmentally responsible operations. The "Partner for Change Award" was presented to the Medical Center in honor of its efforts to reduce waste, eliminate mercury and prevent pollution in a health care environment. The "Making Medicine Mercury-Free Award" was also presented to the Medical Center to recognize its mercury-free management, purchasing policies and recycling programs.

  UMMC's Perioperative Services Team Receives AORN's Outstanding Facility Achievement Award in Perioperative Nursing

  1/22/2010 - UMMC's Perioperative Services Team has been selected by the Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses (AORN) to receive the first annual Outstanding Facility Achievement Award in Perioperative Nursing for 2010. UMMC is the first institution in the world to receive this award, which was created to recognize one institution each year for outstanding collegial achievement in exemplifying the mission of AORN.

  UMMC Receives Magnet Designation in Recognition of Nursing Excellence

  7/13/2009 - The University of Maryland Medical Center has achieved Magnet Designation in recognition of the hospital's nursing excellence. Magnet status is awarded by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to hospitals that meet specific criteria for nursing professionalism, teamwork and the highest standards in patient care. Only about 5 percent of hospitals across the United States have this prestigious designation.
