Welcome to the learning project about the desktop environment on Linux.

Content summary

This project will provide an easy overview to using the Linux desktop and explore the potential and implications of using GNU/Linux systems in education. It is assumed that people are new to running a Linux system and are using the GNOME desktop environment (a seperate resource for KDE can be developed if it is thought that it is needed).

We will aim to cover basic subjects like:

customizing a desktop installation,
connecting to the World Wide Web,
using Internet Relay Chat (IRC) to ask questions and find out more about your particular Linux distribution.

The aim of this course is also to generate open dialogue about using Linux systems in educational settings, to discuss openly the benefits and pitfalls, and to provide a gateway to helpful resources that may be of assistance to educators or students who wish to promote the use of Linux on the desktop amongst their peers or organization.
