How to Make a S'more
Edited by Krystle C., Zack, Jack Herrick, Ben Rubenstein and 70 others
It is unclear who first created this treat, but the earliest s'more (some more) recipe can be found in the Girl Scouts handbook of 1927. The traditional s'more is made with marshmallows, graham crackers and a few pieces of chocolate. Tradition also says that these are consumed quickly, prompting further calls for S'MORE! Tired of reading about it and ready to make your own? We'll show you how!

-
1Start with a campfire. The wood should be dry and free from paint or preservatives (yuck!). Do not use accelerants. (Local Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts can advise on camp fire regulations and guidelines.)
- The embers from charcoal grill, or even your home fireplace, are great environments for s'more-making.
- You can also use the microwave to make s'mores, but you must watch the marshmallow closely—they can get hard in a short amount of time. When using a microwave, you may want to moisten the marshmallow with water, to poof it up more.
-
2Take one graham cracker. Break it in half so that you have two approximately square graham crackers for the "sandwich." You can also buy s'more-ready crackers, if you like.
-
3Unwrap some chocolate bars. Break bar into smaller pieces as indicated by manufacturer's indentations in the surface of the chocolate. Place one or two of these small chocolate pieces on one cracker.
-
4Toast a marshmallow. Carefully insert the clean hot dog style roasting fork (or, if you're really "roughing it", a long, thin stick) into side of marshmallow.
- Suspend marshmallow 3-12 inches above coals of the fire, keeping hands and clothing away from the fire or heat. Rotate marshmallow slowly. When marshmallow is lightly browned, remove from heat. The only thing you want roasting is the marshmallow!
- Immediately place the hot, melted marshmallow on top of the base cracker and chocolate.
- Remove roasting fork or branch from the marshmallow.
-
5Place the top cracker on marshmallow and chocolate. Hot marshmallow goo will melt chocolate pieces. When marshmallow is still very hot, eat graham cracker with melted chocolate and marshmallow.
-
6You're done! Eat, enjoy, and ask for S'MORE!

EditTips
- When the s'more is fully assembled, let it sit for a few seconds. The heat will melt the chocolate and you won't burn your mouth!
- If your marshmallow catches fire, carefully blow it out. Do not start waving the flaming marshmallow stick or you'll risk getting a hot bit of melted marshmallow on your face.
- For some variety, try using other types of chocolate candies, such as crushed-up Kit Kats.
- Besides the traditional s'more, there are many other varieties using such ingredients as peanut butter, bananas, roasted peanuts, strawberries, etc. How about Reese's cups? They add a peanut butter/chocolate twist to the mix!
- In the United Kingdom, digestive biscuits can be used as a substitute for graham crackers.
- Try using Nutella hazelnut spread for your chocolate it gives a chocolate nutty taste.
- Trick to browning vs. charring: rotate marshmallow when a slight puff of smoke rises. If you're patient, and move fast, you will have a toasted, not roasted, marshmallow.
- For a 'classic s'more you can roast the whole s'more over the fire, although this is harder because you have to skewer the whole s'more but it is tastier!
- If you have patience, you can roast a marshmallow over lower heat for many minutes, and actually "puff up" the marshmallow.
- Wrap the entire s'more in foil and toss the s'more on the coals, turning it once during the cooking time.
- For a quicker and easier s'more you can use chocolate sauce instead of the piece of chocolate, if you do this you should reverse the order and put the chocolate on top of the marshmallow.
- You can also use marshmallow cream and chocolate if you don't have access to a heating source.
- You can make a "Belgian S'more" by adding red or black licorice as a final step (you can heat the licorice too but most like the licorice just added at the end). This adds a chewy inside and is really good!
- If you decided to make your s'more in the microwave, put it in for around 0:20-0:35 seconds for a normal s'more.
- Sometimes marshmallow fluff works easy as its cleaner, quick and much tastier!
