Whether you are looking for creative dorm room lighting or want to give your room a “worldly” appeal, consider turning an old globe into a light source.

EditPart 1 of 2: Preparing the Globe
-
1Cut the globe. It can be cut in half or just around the top. Depending on the type of look you are going for, you can cut the globe several different sizes.
- To reduce the risk of the globe becoming a fire hazard, cut the globe along the equator, or in half. If you only cut around the North Pole and South Pole area so that the light kit fits through the top and shines down below, this may present a fire hazard depending on the type of light kit and globe being used.
-
2Create the hole at the top of the globe for the light kit. Take measurements of the pendant light, then match those measurements to the top of the globe. Ensure that there's enough room to fit the kit through the top of the globe.
-
3Trace the area where you want to cut. Consider tracing around the pendant on a sheet of paper and then transferring that tracing to the top of the globe.
-
4Cut the hole around the top of the globe. Cut following the pencil markings.
-
5Paint the inside of the globe. This will help to create an attractive inside finish that enhances the glow of the light bulb. You can use a variety of colors, however white paint works well.
EditPart 2 of 2: Installing the Globe Light
-
1Install the light kit pendant into the ceiling. Depending upon how handy you are, you may want to contact an electrician to perform this step.
-
2Fit the light socket through the top of the globe hole and screw in the cap. This should provide for a snug, compact fit.
-
3Add a light bulb. Then turn on the light.
-
4Consider playing with different colored light bulbs such as blue or even a black light bulb depending upon the type of globe you used.
