Check out the buttons and the hardware. On the left side of the phone, there are three buttons. The + and - buttons are used for adjusting the volume of the device, while the switch is used to turn the volume on and off. On the top of the phone, the button on the right side (or the Sleep/Wake button) is used to turn the screen on and off. The circular button on the front of the phone will bring you back to the Home button.
    • Pressing the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time will take a screenshot.
    • Pressing the volume buttons while on the camera setting will take a picture.
    • To shut off the phone, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button.

Become acquainted with some new features. The following features are available on IOS6 and above.
    • Siri. To access Siri, press and hold the Home button for about 3 seconds. One of the most famous of the new features, Siri is a voice controlled personal assistant. You can give Siri commands verbally such as "Wake me up in 2 hours" or even more complicated things like "Remind me to put the check in the mail when I get home".
    • Shared Photo Stream. With Shared Photo Streams, you can automatically share photos with friends. When you add photos to the Photo Stream, people you add will automatically be able to see them.
      • Enable Shared Photo Streams by going to Settings --> Photos and Camera --> Shared Photo Streams.
    • Maps. Apple Maps now has turn by turn voice navigation, to help you get from Point A to Point B safely and without confusion.
    • Passbook. Passbook is a new feature that saves things like coupons or your boarding pass, so that it is present when you need it.
    • FaceTime. You can now make video calls from your phone over 3G as well as WiFi. To make the call, simply go to a contact and tap Facetime.
    • Facebook Integration. Tell Siri "Post to Facebook I am at the beach" and Siri will update your Facebook. Alternatively, you can add a photo straight from the Photos app - simply tap Share and then Facebook.
  5. 5
Download apps. Downloading apps allows you to customize your phone to your own needs. Some popular apps you can download are:
    • Social networking apps. Most social networking sites have apps, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc.
    • Games. Popular games like Bejeweled, Words with Friends, Angry Birds, and Plants vs. Zombies can help to keep you entertained.
    • LED flashlight apps. There are several different flashlight apps available. For the 4S, you want to look for one that uses the LED light on the back of your phone.
    • Yelp. The Yelp app can be useful when you are looking for good restaurants to eat at or gas stations that are nearby. You can add and read reviews for restaurants, making it less risky to try new places.
  6. 6
Double click the home button. This will open the Task bar. The Task bar shows you the apps you have open.
    • If you would like to close apps, simply hold your finger on one of them until you see the apps wiggle. Then, touch the red negative sign in the left corner of the app you would like to close.
    • Swipe to the left to view more apps that are open. Swipe to the right to control your music settings, or touch the square button on the left to lock or unlock your phone's orientation.
    • Swipe again to adjust the volume on your phone.
  7. 7
Swipe down from the top bar to access the Notification Center. The Notification Center will show the weather and any new notifications from apps you have downloaded. You can adjust which applications show up in the notification center by adjusting the Settings.
  8. 8
Play around with your settings. To make your iPhone 4S the most useful to you, adjust the default settings so that it conforms to your needs.
