Set up the board by unfolding it and putting one piece on each square with the picture facing you.(the pieces can't go on the lakes)

Move your piece to one square forward, backward and side-to-side, upon your turn.
    • The 2 piece has special rules that allow it to move in any direction any number of spaces(until it encounters it's first "victim".

Understand the ruling on victimization of pieces. Higher pieces tend to take out the lower numbered pieces. However, certain pieces have other rules granting them permission to take out others.
    • Number 3 pieces can victimize(remove) the bomb pieces from the board(so you may retrieve the hopeful flag). And the Spy can take the 10, if the Spy reaches the 10(and not the reverse way around).
      • As stated below: The SPY is the strongest piece, for if the SPY attacks the 10; the 10 loses. Also, if the 10 attacks the SPY, the 10 still loses. But if the SPY attacks the other SPY, then both spies die!
    • To take one of your opponents pieces, you have to meet facing each other. You state the number on your piece, and your opponent states his; or vise-versa. The player with the highest number wins.

Know what the final result/achievement of the game entails. The player who captures the flag piece first or captures all of the opponents moving pieces wins!!!

Edit Tips

  • Always place your flag in a random spot somewhere in the back row.
  • Completely surround your flag with bombs. And place an extra bomb in an "fooled you" position.
  • Read through the Stratego Strategy guide that comes along in the box, until you are familiar with all the possible moves in the game. Refresh your memory once and awhile after that.
  • Keep your spy near your #9, since your spy can take out almost any piece given the right conditions while the nine can help block out almost any other piece.
  • At first, don't concentrate on learning the numbered pieces names(and positions), just recognize who can take out who. After that is fully mastered, then you can go ahead and memorize the names for numbers on pieces.(But make sure you know your opponent knos the names as well).

Edit Warnings

  • Some of the pieces are grenades, the only way to get rid of them is to use a #3 piece; that is the only grenade defuser (for disarming a grenade).
  • The SPY is the strongest piece, for if the SPY attacks the 10; the 10 loses. Also, if the 10 attacks the SPY, the 10 still loses. But if the SPY attacks the other SPY, then both spies die!
  • Do not line your front row with bombs because they can not move!
