A mustache mug is a fun way to give the impression that the person drinking has a mustache. With every sip, the mustache appears just about where it would on the face for real. It's an easy project to make and can be a great idea for a gift or office mug.
Steps
Part 1 of 3: Selecting the mug
-
1Select a suitable coffee mug. New or old, it needs to be in good, clean condition. While white is probably the most effective color, it doesn't have to be white; any plain color will work provided the mustache color stands out clearly.
- Avoid using patterned mugs or "busy" mugs with images and words already on them.

Part 2 of 3: Making the mustache template
-
1Print out or draw a small picture of a mustache. Use strong paper or thin card to form the template. The image of the mustache should be proportional to the size of the mug; don't make it too large or won't be that effective.
- Leave plenty of paper/card around the edges of the mustache design; these is what will be taped to the mug when adding the stencil.
-
2Poke a small hole in the center of the mustache template. Use the end of the scissors blade to do this effectively. Use the hole to cut out the middle of the mustache shape right to its edges. Dispose of the cut-out paper or cardboard portion of the mustache.
- Ensure that there is plenty of edge around the mustache shape, for attaching to the mug. See image below for guidance.
Part 3 of 3: Painting on the mustache design
-
1Place the mustache template over the mug. Position it precisely where you want the mustache image to appear on the mug.
-
2Tape the mustache shape down. Do this carefully, so as to keep the exact alignment; if it's crooked, it'll look less effective or might even seem sloppy.
-
3Paint on the mustache design. Using any color nail polish paint over the shape. This will create the mustache.
- Black is the preferred color on a white background. However, the color is really up to you. For other backgrounds, select a color likely to stand out and that complements the mug's background color.
-
4Add another coat if needed. Decide for yourself when the image looks ready. Wait until each coat is dry before adding another one. When you're happy with the final design, remove the paper. Done––you now have a snazzy mustache mug!Ad
