While many contributors come to wikiHow for fun and to help others, some come to promote themselves or their professional expertise as well. If you want to promote yourself on wikiHow, you'll need to make sure you do so without violating any of the community guidelines.

EditSteps

  1. Publicize Yourself the Right Way on wikiHow Step 1.jpg
    1
    Create an account.
    • For maximum recognition, use your brand name or domain name as your Username.
    • Make a wikiHow User Page with a photo, description of what you do and a link to your site.
    • Whenever you contribute to an article on wikiHow, even if you're just correcting a typo, your username will show up on the list of authors and on the page history and people are more likely to notice your brand and click through to your user page.

  2. Publicize Yourself the Right Way on wikiHow Step 2.jpg
    2
Share Your Copyrighted Article on wikiHow.
    • If you publish an article on wikiHow that is already published on your site, you can add a link to the "Sources and Citations" section. Remember to write "Original source, shared with permission" right after the URL. You can only link to the page where the original article is found.
    • The article must not violate our deletion policy; if it sounds like a brochure or an ad, it may get deleted.
    • Before you start the page, make sure we don't already have one on that topic. Search wikiHow for duplicates. If you find one, add your content and link to that existing page, rather than starting a new one (which would get deleted or merged as a duplicate).
  3. Publicize Yourself the Right Way on wikiHow Step 3.jpg
    3
Write articles on how to use your website, product or service.
    • Note that just telling someone to come to your site and giving them basic and obvious instructions is not considered useful to our readers. Try to think of a task a reader might carry out on the website that they wouldn't already know how to do. Examples of articles that do this properly are How to Use Google Multiple Sign In and How to Block a Bidder from Your eBay Auction.
    • Be sure to add the name of your website/product/service in the title, such as "How to Register for an Account at XYZ.com".
    • You can then link to your website if it's a crucial part of the instructions.
    • Note that if you go overboard writing many articles on slightly different things about your website, you'll test the patience of our patrollers and risk getting blocked as a spammer.

EditCase Study[1]

Here's a great example of someone who promoted his website and business on wikiHow, while still providing great content and without violating our commercial guidelines: Michael Rozbruch. He's a Certified Tax Resolution Specialist (CTRS) and licensed CPA who runs a business called Tax Resolution Services. Let's go over the things he did right, so that others who'd like to promote their business on wikiHow can learn from this example:

  1. Publicize Yourself the Right Way on wikiHow Step 4.jpg
    1
He wrote about his business on his user page. Your user page is the perfect place to talk about whatever services and products you offer, and to link to your website. While you can write in any way you want, it's best to keep your descriptions neutral and professional, like Michael did:
  2. Publicize Yourself the Right Way on wikiHow Step 5.jpg
    2
He wrote several practical articles on unique topics. By making sure that the articles were informative and helpful, and by writing on topics that haven't already been written about on wikiHow, his name shows up first in the list of contributors immediately below the title. This increases the likelihood that readers will click through to his user page, where they can learn more about his business. He's also building a reputation at wikiHow as a trustworthy source of tax information, which can only help his brand in the long run.
  3. Publicize Yourself the Right Way on wikiHow Step 6.jpg
    3
He promoted his wikiHow contributions, outside of wikiHow. On his blog, for example, he posted an entry about his articles getting Rising Stars. Not only does this spread the word about wikiHow, but it also shows that his work is respected on a website that's read by millions of people every day.

EditTips

  • As a general rule, the best way to help yourself is to help others. The more you share, the more others will respond.
  • Participate frequently. A momentary contribution will only imply obvious self-promotion.
  • Keep in mind that all links on wikiHow are "nofollow" meaning that they do not get indexed by search engines, and your website's search engine ranking does not improve as a result of the URL being posted on wikiHow.

EditWarnings

  • If you publicize yourself in any other way, access to this site may be blocked.
  • Promotional links, found within an article, will be removed. Others may think of you as a "spammer" rather than a trustworthy source.
