How to Start a Massage Therapy Business
Edited by Jono, Puddy, Nicole Willson, Zach and 2 others
How to start a massage business is no easy task but you can do it on a shoestring and start helping people to feel better. In certain states, a professional massage license is required, so check your state's licensing laws.
Edit Steps
- 1Create a vision for your massage business
- 2Create a mission statement and purpose statement
- 3Create an informed consent statement to let people know what your work is all about.
- 4Do some market research in your area. What is it exactly that people want? You can't assume that everyone wants or needs a massage (even if they do!) Find out if there is a need for the type of massage business that you want to start. You can do a survey, make phone calls, put a survey on your website, do a postcard mailing with the survey questions or website address
- 5Find an ideal location for your business based on your research
- 6Rent an office from another health care provider or rent from an office building or home converted into an office.
- 7Think about starting a home business or a mobile massage business
- 8Create a website for your massage business using optimized keywords and pages. Use your website to make additional income for you while you do massage
- 9Create a marketing plan for your business
- 10Figure out how many clients you will need to make a profit. Figure out what you will need to charge to make money.
- 11Learn about networking and make contacts with doctors, yoga teachers, Naturopaths, Chiropractors, Acupuncturists, Dentists, Hospitals and any one else you can think of.
- 12Have an open house and announce it to the public in the paper or with postcard marketing
- 13Create a specialty or learn a special type of massage like oncology massage, sports massage and target a specific population.
- 14Find a mentor and peer supervisor to support you in your journey and consider forming your own peer supervision group for more support.
- 15When you are successful start mentoring others to share what you have learned along the way and give back to the community
Edit Tips
- Get regular massage treatments. Trade or better yet pay for them. If you expect people to come an pay you for a weekly massage, it will help if you walk your talk.
- Invest in yourself and hire people to support you - a business coach, website developer and a financial planner. You can't afford not to.
- Your success depends on what your beliefs are about making money and being successful. Most of our beliefs are unconscious. Work with a therapist to understand yourself more
