Why not make sure you're getting a good night's sleep. It should seem obvious that this should be the first step in staying awake at work.

That's not the point of the article 208.249.136.178. It's how to stay awake after the damage has been done.

i agree, 'sleep the night before' should be number one. The article is poor. Eat appropriate breakfast should be second, and drink more water.

For the complainers: Read the title, it's how to "Stay Awake at Work" not "How to Prevent the Desire to Sleep at Work". It must be nice to have a job where you always know when you are going into work. Not everyone has a job where that is always the case. Some medications also have side effects that make you drowsy.
A few months ago I went to the emergency room at 2:30 AM with a kidney stone. I didn't check out until about 5:00 AM. I was sleepy later that day.

That's correct the article is how to "stay awake at work" which would imply one is already at work, so you might wanna rethink what you just said 82.32.52.85. This article is for someone who is belabored by being tired in the present, not for someone making future projections of tomorrows work day. It's pretty obvious by getting a good nights rest one will have the best chances of staying awake at their job the next day. You're wrong get over it.

Citrus is also great for giving yourself a burst of energy without a crash. Having an orange can provide just the zest you need. One trick I like is to buy a small container of clementines and keeping it in the work environment. This way, its easy to have small, refreshing snacks throughout the day.

nibble on a hot pepper, like a jalapeno, or some of that red crushed pepper that sometimes comes with pizza. you can do it discretely and it won't bother anyone and it works.

I have a small can of V8 about an hour after eating my lunch. This helps counter act the feeling of sluggishness I used to get after eating lunch.

this article seems to be a copy (almost word for word) of an article on a different website http://www.dumblittleman.com/2008/01/how-to-stay-awake-at-work-or-school.html

There's a problem with the top item- it seems some of the words have been displaced to the bottom (references) area. I'm not a member of this wiki, otherwise I would fix it myself.

Pain is the name of the game. That s right. If you are feeling too sleepy and nothing works, induce pain in body by biting or any other way.
You may not feel pain of biting after 10- 15 mins but that shock will keep your brain awake for long time.
Use force of pain only if nothing from above mentioned and from the article works.

I suffer from sleep apnoe and that causes me to wake up about 100 times every hour - without even knowing about it, but it does causes me to fall asleep at work, and nothing I do help. I need help to remain awake during the day or I will be fired.

If you are sleeping in your job... that means job is boring; not interstesting enough. Change your job or work at it to make it interesting. Other wise you are going to be fired sooner or later anyways.

main point: dont try to stay awake, what practically happens is that dead brain cells clouds your thinking and u might do worse after 10 hours of work without sleep then 5 with sleep and clear thinking, just wake up early...toughest thing, actually waking up and staying up

I am a big fan of the exercise ball as a "chair" - I tend to especially use this when having trouble focusing. Another thing to try is white noise - something like http://whitenoisemeditation.com/default.aspx ... you would think it makes you MORE tired when it fact it has something in it that (for me) helps me stay focused and awake. Double bonus for those that are tired and suffer from ADD.

If you are really having major difficulties staying awake at work, school, driving or whatever it may be, you think you are getting a full nights' sleep and you've tried every energy drink, caffine hit and all the rest, then you should look into getting tested for narcolepsy or sleep apnoea. You can be medicated and/or given different therapies to help your 'excessive daytime sleepiness' and 'sleeping attacks'. I have narcolepsy and the difference is incredible from when I'm on medication to when I'm off it. There's a full blown testing process so don't think this will be a quick fix, but the benefits for your long term physical, mental and emotional health are undeniable and it may even help you keep your job!!!
