How to Grow the "Three Sisters"
Edited by El León, Teresa, Kanhu, BR and 3 others
The Three Sisters are what corn, beans, and squash are called when planted a certain way. The Pilgrims learned this method of planting from the Native Americans. The three sisters are called such because the corn provides a pole for the bean vines to go up. The beans keep the soil healthy, and the squash help prevent weeds from growing.
EditSteps
-
1Plant groups of 2 corn seeds. Make sure there is 1 foot between each group of plants, and there is 1 foot between each row.Ad
-
2Pull the weaker plant out of the ground when the corn is about 8 inches tall. This may sound silly, but it makes sure that there is room for the stronger corn plant to grow strong.
-
3Plant 2 bean seeds (the kind of seed that is a vine) 2 inches away from the bottom of the strong corn plant, each of them straight across from the other. You will not need to pull either of these out unless one dies, or they are crowding each other.
-
4Plant the squash when the beans have grown up the corn stalk about 4 inches. Plant the squash about one squash plant to every corn plant. Make sure you leave enough room for the squash to spread out and grow though.Ad
