Many of us want to escape the big cities. Some want to start a family. Some want to make a career move. Some just want to start a new lifestyle in a small town.

Decide what sort of small town you want to live in. Do you want to live in suburbia? Do you want to live in a industrialised town or a town in the middle of the countryside? What, for you, is a small town - one shop, ten shops or fifty shops and a multistory car park? Location also in proximity to motorways, train stations and other cities and towns are important.

If you are moving a family, assess local schools. This is imperative. Some small towns have some of the best state education England has to offer. Equally, look at the job opportunities there if you need to find a new career.

When deciding on your town, personal recommendations are invaluable. Ask around. Ask your friends that you're seeking a lifestyle change and you want to move to a small town. They could have grown up in a small town, or holidayed in one that could be perfect.

Check out the "Shires" - In England, counties such as Berkshire, Worcestershire, Yorkshire and Gloucestershire have some of the prettiest small towns England has to offer. Go on Google Earth and zoom right in on towns!

Go visit. Do not just decided on a town then go and move there. Check out the towns you want to see, spend a night there if you can. Get a feel for life in that town.
