Few things are more stressful than receiving a negative or unfair performance evaluation. Before signing off, see if your boss will reconsider any negative comments or observations. If not, use the space provided for your comments. State why you disagree with your boss's assessment. Once the evaluation is over, use it as a guide for self-improvement during the coming year.

    Remain calm during the evaluation, and don't interrupt.

    Ask for clarification of vague points. "You wrote here that I don't always cooperate with my co-workers. Can you list some specific times when I was perceived as uncooperative?"

    Were you marked down in areas where you don't need to be? Respectfully point out the discrepancies. "I have copies of my time sheets for the last year, and I only took three sick days. I don't consider that excessive."

    Don't downgrade your co-workers in an effort to make yourself look better. For example, "Jane comes in late far more often than I do!"

    Once the evaluation is concluded, set goals for the coming year. Schedule regular meetings with the boss to discuss your progress. Indicate verbally and in writing how you are following through on his/her recommendations. "I'm getting counseling through the Employee Assistance Program." "I've signed up for a refresher class in Excel."

    Ask your boss to let you know about problems or complaints when they occur, rather than waiting until your next evaluation.

  • Your boss may be out to get you, hoping a bad evaluation will make you quit. Trust your instincts. If you feel this is the case, begin looking for another job.
  • Don't discuss your evaluation, bad or good, with a co-worker.
