AVG Technologies provides free and paid anti-virus software to users. Many of their products come with an add-on called "AVG Secure Search" which replaces the toolbar in your Internet browser to vet your search results. However, it can be difficult to remove independently from the browser. You can find out how to remove AVG Secure Search by using the set of instructions for Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer web browsers.

    Open your Google Chrome Internet browser.

    Click on the bar icon to the right of your URL bar. If you do not have the wrench icon, click on "Chrome" and "Preferences" in the top horizontal toolbar.

    Choose "Settings" in the left column.

    Scroll until you find "Search."

    Choose the default search engine you would like to use.

    Click the "Manage Search Engines" page to make further changes. You can delete AVG Secure Search and click the "Default" link to set the default search engine, such as Google.
    • Alternatively, you can set the new page search function. Scroll until you find "Appearance." Choose "Show Home Button." Select the "Change" link next to the "New Tab" page. Type in the URL of the search engine you would like to use.

    Click on the "Extensions" option in the left column.

    Find "AVG Secure Search." Uncheck the "Enabled" box and press the delete trash can icon next to it.

    Close out Chrome. Restart it to activate changes.

    Open your Internet Explorer browser.

    Click on the "Tools" menu at the top.

    Choose the AVG Secure Search add-on. Disable AVG search in the bottom right corner.

    Return to the Add-ons manager. Find "Search Providers."
    • AVG is likely to be listed as your default search provider in this box.

    Choose a search engine, such as Bing or Google.

    Select the new search engine with your right mouse button. Choose "Default" from your list of options.

    Right mouse click on the AVG engine again. Click the "Delete" option or click "Disable Suggestions."

    Close your Internet Explorer browser and reopen it.

    Open the Firefox browser.

    Return to the search bar that is built into the Firefox browser window.

    Find where it says "Preference Name." Click on your right mouse button next to "browser.search.defaultenginename."
