Two Methods:Making the Tempera PaintUsing the Tempera Paint

Draw a picture, and want to color it? Or perhaps you want to paint a masterpiece? Egg tempera paint is an ideal painting medium that can be made using your own items found in the kitchen.

EditMethod 1 of 2: Making the Tempera Paint

  1. 1
Separate the egg yolk from the white. You are only going to be using the yolk––use the white in cooking or discard of it.
    • Don't add the entire egg. This will create egg wash and it won't work and will have to be disposed of.
  2. 2
Whisk the egg yolk and the water together until foamy. Make sure to not let it sit too long alone, and whisk it when it settles back into a translucent yellow.
  3. 3
Grab an ice cube tray. Pour the mix straight in.
  4. 4
Add your chosen color. Mix with a dowel, or something similar, such as the end of a plastic spoon.

EditMethod 2 of 2: Using the Tempera Paint

  1. 1
Paint your picture with a paintbrush. Or, use a Q-tip if a brush isn't available.
  2. 2
Allow to dry for some time. This paint takes fairly long to dry.
  3. 3
Remove bubbles if needed. If there are bubbles they will show when dry. Take a toothpick and scrape the bubbles off when dry. This will leave a mark, but you can re-paint it later.
  4. 4
Done! you now have a homemade paint that is all natural and, if a toddler accidentally eats it, it's made from edible materials so it shouldn't do any harm. It tastes bad though!

EditTips

  • For more of an acrylic pain, add a little white with the egg yolk.
  • Your plain mix should be an off-yellow color. If it's a creamy white, you've added too much water. You can still use it, but if it's a problem (consistency, color, etc) you will have to restart.
  • Have time to do this. If rushed, it won't work.
  • This is not very hard to do, but it is recommended for those over 4-5+.

EditWarnings

  • While this paint is not toxic, it is not meant to be ingested. It might contain bacteria from the egg, which can cause illness.
  • If allergic to eggs, do not make or use this paint.

EditThings You'll Need

  • Fresh, large egg
  • Bowl for separating egg white and yolk
  • Whisk
  • 2 teaspoons water
  • Ice cube tray
  • Liquid or jell food color
  • Dowel or spoon end
  • Brush or Q-tip
