How to Make Swedish Glogg

Jul glögg is a traditional Swedish recipe, specially appreciated in December, because it's associated with Christmas and it brings warmth in the cold winter months. It's an alcoholic drink, thus suitable only for adults.

- A bottle of dry red wine
- Dried figs (4-6)
- 1½ cinnamon sticks
- 1 cup raisins
- 10 cardamom seeds, fresh
- 5 whole cloves, fresh
- 3 pieces orange peel (dried or fresh)
- ½ lb. sugar cubes
- Blanched, slivered and split almonds (a cup)

1Pour the wine into a suitable container.Ad

2Add the cardamom and orange peel.

3Insert cloves in the figs. Add them to the mixture.

4Add raisins, almonds and cinnamon sticks.

5Stir, cover and simmer the mixture over low heat.

6Remove from heat when the boiling begins.

7Carry the kettle away from the stove, to outside, or some place safe.

8Place sugar cubes in a long-handled metal sieve.

9Wear a cooking mitt.

10Moisten the cubes in the drink and remove them from the drink again.

11Light the cubes of sugar with a match or similar, and allow to burn.

12Dip the sieve into the drink, until all sugar is dissolved.

- You can skip the flaming the sugar part, and just dissolve the sugar in the drink.
- Glögg should be heated before serving, but never boiled.

- Flaming alcohol carries a risk of burning or flames catching on other items. Keep your skin and eyes well away from the flames and only burn the alcohol somewhere away from flammable areas. Done responsibly, it is safe.
