Knowledge of a foreign language is an invaluable asset on a resume or on a trip abroad. However, languages can be difficult to master, and the grammar of a language is often the most difficult part of the endeavor. Learning how to master foreign language grammar varies depending on the target language. Students should not be discouraged by the difficulties but equipped with learning tools to enhance progress.

    2
Investigate the possibilities for learning the target language. Students should find many foreign language classes in local communities, around the world or online.
  3. Master Foreign Language Grammar Step 3.jpg
    3
Check out the available alternative learning tools. A good bookstore will have foreign language learning materials including instruction on audio tapes or audio video tapes.

Study the grammatical structure of the language using the chosen method. The grammatical structure shows the relationship of the words in a sentence. Native speakers learn some of the grammar of their own language without any instruction. They learn this just by listening and speaking from the time they are born. Although a native speaker might not be able to explain all of the grammar rules, they know and use them instinctively. This knowledge of the grammatical structure provides clearer understanding of the written and spoken word. When learning a foreign language, students study the grammar of the language to understand the order of the language.

Investigate the exceptions to the rules in the grammar of the target language. Languages have many regular rules and structures. However, most languages also have exceptions to the rules. Exposure to an irregularity in the target language without a keen understanding of these exceptions could be the cause of confusion and frustration.

Practice the language consistently. Complete all required assignments or lessons but challenge yourself above and beyond the requirements. Read texts in the target language with careful attention to the word order in each sentence. Listen to programs in the target language even if you do not understand every word.

Use grammar terms from the native language to categorize terms from the target language. Identify the nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs in the acquired vocabulary. Compare and contrast the use of these words in the grammatical structure of the native language and the target language. A teacher probably will not require a knowledge of these comparisons, but the knowledge will help you to understand the target language.

EditTips

  • Practice as much as possible. Learning a foreign language in a classroom or and online course may be most convenient, but practice in a realistic situation is the best learning environment possible. Search for native speakers of the target language and try to arrange practice sessions that force you to use the language.
  • Contact organizations that sponsor foreign exchange students and consider hosting a student who is a native speaker of your target language.
