How to Learn to Cook with Cooking Classes
Edited by MA, Tryme2, RynaeM, KommaH and 2 others
Cooking is an art. Just like other things you get involved in such as a hobby you get better over time. So, be patient!
EditSteps
-
1Choose a cooking class. Look at night classes and cooking schools for classes that are being offered. Those run by chefs will be most expensive and likely to be more complicated, while those run by adult education classes will be cheaper and probably less complicated.
- Choose one according to your budget and how fun you think it'll be.

2Pay for the classes and get all the materials needed, such as cookbooks, apron, notebooks, etc. Turning up unprepared to your first lesson will waste time and might cause you to have to sit it out.
-
3Attend all of the cooking classes. Missing some can cause you to miss vital lessons in what to do when cooking.
-
4Keep good notes. You won't remember everything you do, so keep a good record of things as you learn and do them. Write up notes straight after class if you can't write them during class; just do it while you're fresh.
- Also start to learn techniques and recipes off by heart. This is what real chefs do.
-
5Be hygienic. Be prepared to wash your hands a lot and to keep all equipment clean. Practice safe food handling methods. if you're not sure, ask or read up about this aspect.
-
6Ask questions. Don't be afraid to ask questions, even if it seems inane. There are many reasons behind why techniques are used but the chef may forget to explain them.
-
7Get used to the principal ingredients used for particular dishes, as well as the terminology for techniques. Do a lot of reading at home in between classes.
-
8Practice. After classes, try the dishes and techniques that you've learned in your home environment. See if you can replicate what you learned in class.
-
9Sit any tests offered. If you want to cook under competition or test constraints, to get a certificate perhaps, see what is on offer.Ad
EditTips
- Remember to befriend the teacher, if you do then she might show you certain techniques or cooking secrets that he/she doesn't teach the class.
- Take basic notes (such as ingredient lists, etc).
