How to Deal With Uncertainty
To deal with uncertainty you may either replace it with certainty or face it and accept it.
EditSteps
-
1Understand what is involved in uncertainty. Uncertainty means things are either one way (A) or another (B). Knowing which way things are can sometimes be overcome by various strategies:
- By trial and error
- Try A
- Try B
- Evaluate and choose between A or B
- By observation
- Look at A
- Look at B
- Evaluate and choose between A or B

2Deal with it. Sometimes uncertainty cannot be overcome and you must resort to dealing with it.
- Ponder: What if A, what if B? What if neither A nor B? What if both A and B?
- Look for the positive in uncertainty. Knowing that one does not know is also knowledge, perhaps the greatest of all.
- Accept uncertainty by letting go of the quest for knowledge.

EditTips
- The world was once believed to be flat and people were certain it was.
- Tough decisions are sometimes needed to be made with only half of the information or based on uncertain information. Risk-taking might benefit from proactive evaluation.
EditWarnings
- Uncertainty may lead to worry, a main ingredient in anxiety.
- Too much of resting in uncertainty may result in not knowing what to believe at all. At the end of the day even the toughest skepticist has to accept that the ground will not crack underneath his feet--although how can we know for certain?
- We don't know.
