How to Ask For an Allowance
Edited by LEE HUI-CHUN, Aunt B., Flickety, Glutted and 23 others
Many children receive an allowance. An allowance allows children of all ages to begin learning the skills necessary to successfully budget their expenses. These skills are integral to a successful life. These skills are not taught in schools. If parents fail to teach these skills, young people will have to learn them the hard way. Many fail to ever learn them at all.

-
1Research.
- Ask around and discover how much your friends receive. Although parents or guardians may compare you to a friend, or say that you simply are not them, you should still ask for a specific and reasonable amount. Some experts recommend one dollar a week for each birthday. On this schedule, a five-year old would receive $5 per week. Other experts recommend one dollar per week for each year of school completed. On this schedule, a tenth grader would receive $10 per week.
- Prepare of a list of expenses you are willing to take responsibility for: lunches, haircuts, shoes, clothes, sports equipment, movie tickets, etc. Your list should include approximate costs to illustrate your needs. Your list should also include goals for saving, investing and donating to charity.
- Anticipate which questions your parents may ask and which answers you will give. If for any reason your parents don't agree, just wait a bit. Show that you can be responsible and that giving you an allowance is worth it.

2Present your research to your parents.
- Choose a time that is not too hectic, when your parents seem predisposed to think well of you. Consider preparing a meal or cleaning up around the house. They may suspect that you are up to something, but they may still appreciate the gesture.
- Explain your method for gathering your research, outline your results and ask for the allowance. Explain why you need it and why you should get it.
