I get the feeling that whoever wrote this article misunderstood what a computer geek truly is. A computer geek is not a person who uses chat room language in their daily lives, has messy hair and big glasses (though I'll admit I'm practically blind without my glasses), or who do destructive things with their computer. A true computer geek is a person who has a truly passionate interest in computers and wants to know about them. They will always be learning, and will always accept new knowledge from anyone who knows something. They're also constructive, and understand what they're doing. This means no batch file "viruses" that delete contents from the system32 folder, nor real viruses that cause serious damage to the computer (though I guess controlled experiments for learning is okay).

Aside from philosophy, I think that whoever wrote this didn't know what they were talking about. One step earlier said to learn a programming language like C++ (which I improved to stop saying that HTML isn't geeky), but then later said to learn binary code. Now, it isn't false to know binary code, but when you learn C++, you are taught that binary, hexadecimal, and octal are a convenience and you should learn them. So, in most cases, I think that a person would know binary code by that step.

Pretty dumb, Microsoft is the Evil Empire, it (i probably will get something bad for saying this) isn't that bad, that's why it owns the marketshare, because it works 90/80% of the time. Reply to Niall

You can't become a computer Nerd/Geek. You are born as one:)

Also, whoever wrote this is not a computer geek because Linux is for n00bs.

Details needed. Maybe list some programming languages and then weave the web of links to some articles showing how to develop in a programming language, such as C++, or a scripting language, such as PHP.

I think that despite criticism, this guide was fairly accurate. For those who think it too vague, it is an adequate loose guide. The page cannot teach you all of C++, PHP, or Python. That takes years. This was more of a checklist. And for the Operating System arguements, if you cannot decide between Windows and Linux, you should partition your hard-disk and get a program like LILO so you can have both on your machine

Um, by the way, I take this offensive, i believe the title should be changed. Because, I do know a bit too much about computers, but I believe I shouldn't be called a geek. Otherwise, it needs more info.

BR, can you explain why you don't like slashdot.org in the article? It is a geek site and extremely informative. Cnet is already mentioned, so I don't see the problem with adding another site.

Wtf is Point 13? Okay it's obvious, that you need knowledge about Unix (like) systems, but you can run a Server on MS Windows as well (Windows 2k8(R2) or Windows 2k3(R2) Server works pretty well) and MS did a lot of effort (especially on 2k8) to improve security for Server systems. As CLI you can use the MS Powershell.

Okay we like using open Systems since we have deeper control of the components we are using. For the tools provided by the system. For answering times when needing a bugfix or support. For the support of open standards and 'coz lots of so called geeks love to spread wisdom and not put it in an closed worked where noone besides themself can use this knowledge. I'd love to see this point removed at all or at least to be edited, so it contains information instead of empty words.

Same thing on 12. Use a restrictive firewall 'coz ppl will cry? Wtf dude, srsly... There's plenty of reasons to have control about the traffic in your Network but "make ppl cry" is none. Your Firewall should be configured to let only programs spread information that you want to do so. To create Honeypots or DMZs for Servers and stuff, but make ppl cry... I'm gonna cry and I am what you describe beeing a geek.

This is wrong: the most paid job in the Computers is Management. I'm a so called a Geek today because at 10 I was doing Machine Codes to hack games, and I quite after 3 years my first programming job because it's less paid than being a dumb ass chief; at least in Europe. Don't tell People they can money, it's already full of opportunists in the IT just they didn't know what to study.

Wrong!

1024 bytes is a Kibibyte (KiB), but most hardware manufacturers force the wrong definition to confuse the consumer.

According to Le Système international d'unités (SI), the organization that standardizes the metric system, Kilo explicitly means 1,000, or 10^3. Nothing else.

The fact that the original assignment of 1,024 bytes to the term "Kilobyte" conflicts with the metric system, is the reason why the new word (Kibibyte) was created.

1,000 B = 1KB

1,024 B = 1KiB

The prefix Kibi- means 1,024, created by the International Electrotechnical Commission in 1998.

That's right, 1998. Almost 20 years ago!
