About IDF's Clinical Guidelines Task Force
The IDF Task Force on Clinical Practice Guidelines was established in response to the proliferation of clinical and other guidelines in the early 1990s. It was apparent that the content, background and structure of these publications varied greatly. Guidelines are an essential component of achieving quality diabetes care for all people with the condition, and while many excellent guidelines had appeared, they were not always readily available, accessible beyond their target country or countries.
What is more, many became unavailable or out of date within a very short time period. More concerning for IDF, many of the guidelines were directed at highly resourced clinical care, and did not address the needs of most people with diabetes in the world.
The Task Force on Clinical Practice Guidelines was set up to tackle some of these issues. Initial aims included: raising awareness of quality guidelines; giving information as to how guidelines were developed; providing a mechanism for IDF to endorse quality guidelines, and looking for opportunities to allow people with diabetes to make use of guidelines in culturally and economically relevant ways.
