Could someone explain what an "sty" is? This WikiHow is useless with a key elaboration. |

I think it's supposed to be "stye", as in a growth on the eyelid. Obviously, this would need more information to be useful. |

Home remedies for stye or home remedy for stye with Triphala water: The eyes for the people suffering from Cataract should be washed with triphala water. To make triphala water, add 1 tsp of triphala powder in 1 glass of water and let it stay overnight. Filter it in the morning and use it to wash your eyes. Application of prescribed antibiotic drops may also be used to help fight the infection Guava leaves, warmed and placed on a warm damp cloth, and then used as a compress, reduce the redness, pain and swelling. Surgical drainage of the stye may also be necessary if the stye is not responding to treatment Boil 1 teaspoon of coriander seeds with a cupful of water like an herbal tea preparation to wash the eyes 3-4 times a day. Place a handful of fresh parsley in a soup bowl. Pour a cup of boiling water over the parsley and let it steep for 10 minutes. Soak a clean washcloth in the hot parsley water, lie down, put the cloth on your closed lids and relax for 15 minutes. Repeat the procedure before bedtime. Parsley water is also good for eliminating puffiness around the eyes. Take a cup of water. Dissolve 2-3 granules of alum in it. Use as an eyewash. There are also over the counter topical medications for the stye, which are mostly made up of petroleum jelly and other emollients to keep the eye moisturized. Non-prescription products, however, cannont treat the infection associated with a sty, but can get temporary relief of its symptoms, including burning, stinging and itching. Rarely styes require lancing by a doctor. ub clove spice in water and apply it over the stye to relief pain. Use a grated potato as a poultice to reduce swelling in inflamed eyes. Slit an aloe leaf lengthwise and place the pulpy side on the sore eye. Vitamin A is known to be beneficial in the cure and treatment of stye. |

i have used about three to four teaspoons of salt in a eight ounce cup of hot water, or at least as hot as you can stand it, but it needs to be hot even if it is a little uncomfortable; just remember to not make it to hot. take a wash rag and dip it in the salt water solution and place it on the eye, as soon as the wash rag begins to get cold to you. you then place it back in the cup. repeat this until the cup of water gets cold. my suggestion is to use it every two hours. also this is not immediate, it may take several days, maybe one to three days but it has always made my stye come to a head, but you may never know. remember that your eyes contain your blood vessels and therefore are a portal into your body so please use caution when using my method as their is a lot of salt used and could cause harm to a human body that is susceptible to malfunctioning bodily functions due to excess salt.

best thing is hot compress, let the thing come to a head, once you see it white just gently scratch it off and squeeze a little, like a pimple, be very gentle, it wont hurt as much after that but is still uncomfortable till all gone, can take couple of days

Thanks for the microwave one where you put a hot wascloth in the mic.for 1 min then place it on ut stye, I did it and the puss came puring out in side my eyelid. GREAT ADVICE Also, another way toc cur an under-the-eyelid stye is to take a smalcloth and getit steaming. Then you open your eyelid where there should be a stye showing as a small whiteish yellowish dot, put the rag on it ad it helps puss come out also.

My daughter had a very bad stye that warranted a visit to the ophthalmologist. I warn you that a lot of the advice given above is HARMFUL, especially the vinegar and baking soda advice. That is clearly advice from an evil person trying to induce harm to your eyes.
The advice from the ophthalmologist is to use warm moist compresses several times per day. Do no squeeze. To keep the compress warm, buy a hot/cold pack from the pharmacy designed specifically for this purpose. Warm it in the microwave oven according to instructions, wrap it in a warm moist facecloth, and apply to the affected eye for at least 10 minutes. The recovery period can be quite long, taking as much as several weeks, so be patient.
If the condition worsens, or you are not certain that you have a stye, see a doctor.

To keep hot compresses hot, I use a crock pot filled with water and wash cloths. I assume a saline solution with a few drops of lavender and tea tree essential oil will keep the water more sanitary and fresh. I found the 1 teaspoon of salt per quart of water was used for contact lense saline so I use that proportion. lavender oil is good for healing wounds and tea tree oil is an antiseptic only a few drops makes healing more like a visit to a european health spa.

Styes are so painful; I got four simultaneous styes in the same eye; the upper lid then a fifth came instantly in the lower eye lid, they all burst outside the upper lid except the stye in the lower eye lid. It all lasted for over 4 weeks; and I don't even have the words to discribe the pain I had during those nasty days.
After it cured, it left a hump-scar; some kind of swollen upper eye lid till now; its been two if not three months since then. The right eye has also caught a stye recently; it hilled but left the same swollen upper eye lid; then a few days ago; it came back and has refused to heal completely. There is none of the medication I haven't used as said above, has visited professional doctors, eye docs and even used these HOME REMEDIES but to no success.
I jes wanna say that people are unique and depending from one individual to another; different medication cure differently and don't expect wot cured patient x to cure patient y.
I haven't lost hope tho; but am in serious pain right now, I gotta go home and take a nap b'se working is become so so unlively for me.
Hoping to see someone posting medication that I haven't tried so far, u never know.
Regards, eLHAMiiD_

I sometimes get them. What I do, is as soon as my eye feels a bit scratchy or there is any pain at all in my eye lid, I wash my eye with anti bacterial soap, liquid kind. It hurts pretty good when you do this, but 9 out of 10 times it stops the infection before it can really get going. You need to get all around the lashes and it will get in your eye. It sucks but normally does the job. I disagree with not breaking it open. I've actually lanced my eye lid myself with a very thin needle and squeezed it out, then immediately washed it with anti bacterial soap to kill off the bacteria causing the infection. The compresses didn't really work well for me when I've used them, your mileage may vary. If you don't have a steady hand, don't even attempt to lance yourself, don't wanna take a needle to the eye, know what I mean? But if you're confident, go for it. It's the same thing a doctor will do if you go. I figure save the money and do it myself. Just pull the eye lid away from the eye, and lance it. Puss should immediately be seen at the lancing point, so you know you are far enough in. Again, takes a little courage to do this, but it gets the job done. Use as sharp and thin a needle as you can, and be sure to clean it in rubbing alcohol or similar first (the needle I mean). Bam, done and over with. Keep washing it with antibacterial soap till all pain and swelling subsides.

with a stye, DO NOT pop it or scratch it! it will get so much worse! i have had alot of styes because i am very sensitive to alot of eye makeup products. I wouldnt suggest using vinegar, as it could blind you... the best remedy for a stye is warm milk. my mom showed me this and i swear by this method. warm up a bowl of milk in the microwave, not too hot! and use a clean wash cloth or folded paper towel and let the warm milk into your eye and flow over the stye. Repeat for ~5 minutes. i have done this for every stye i have gotten and they are gone by the next morning!! make sure you do this after you have washed your face and removed makeup though. also, if you wear make up and have a stye, discontinue eye make up use until it clears away, you should probably throw out the make up that you were using before as it probably gave you your stye.

The one constant thing here is heat. Heat draws out oils. Whatever heat method you use, be it a washcloth, wheatbag, baked potato (don't knock it) NEVER pop a stye. A stye is caused by staphylococcal bacteria. From what I understand it is found in the nose (as well as other places) so pocket the picker and wash your eyes daily. Also if you didn't notice the name it is a Staph infection in all technicality (source: http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/Staphylococcal- infections/Pages/Introduction.aspx ) So popping it will cause a worse infection. And NEVER put anything in your eye that is not designed to go into your eye. Your eyes are very sensitive organs.
If your eyes become infected it is always best to call your doctor.

okay, i had a monster stye that was actually so big that it blocked my tear duct, therefore not allowing anything to drain...my eye was swollen shut for two days! but if you go to the doctor they will give you stye ointment (or you can get less powerful ointment over the counter) and my doc also gave me a shot of antibiotics to help speed the process (even though it's taken almost five days now and it's still not gone).
okay, so put the ointment on the head or inside your eyelid and then take a HOT rag and use it as a compress...the hot compress speeds up the ointment's process. i always boil a pot of water...don't touch or squeeze it out, because this will cause you to get more styes!!! i found that out the hard way!
DO NOTTT use eye makeup! oh dear god lol, don't use eye makeup...the first time i got a stye i didn't know what it was and i just used makeup like i normally do and almost instantly it got worse. also, don't lay in a tanning bed...a stye is bacterial and tanning beds make bacterial stuff worse...ie, your stye will multiply lol

I'm battling a couple styes right now and doctors don't really help. Same ol story, hot wash cloth 3-4 times a day for about 15 min each. A slow healing process. I went to the health food store and bought some loose leaf bright eye tea. As well as a bright eye tincture. I made a tea by soaking the tea for about 1/2 hr then dipped a wash cloth in the tea and let it soak on my eyes for a while till the cloth was cold. The next day i noticed the swelling in one eye was down and the other eye, which had more of a scare tissue of two old styes also went down. i'm kind of excited about this method but i'm not out of the dark yet.

I've been getting styes since I was little. Never fails I get a bad one ATLEAST once a year. I have a pretty bad one right now. I've been cleaning my eye with no tears baby shampoo, and boiling an egg and wrapping the egg in a towel and putting that on the stye. The egg holds heat soooo much longer than anything else I've tried. And believe me I've tried it all! I've never popped mine purposely, a friend hit my sunglasses when I had one which caused it to pop, and to this day I can't grow eyelashes in that spot! Its kind of just a waiting game! Keep the eye clean, and hot compress the hell out of it!

Epson salt is the best thing that ever happened to my stye! After using warm compresses for a month to get it down to a less swollen noticable eyelid, I went to see different specialists. Following their instructions, I took three different types of oral antibiotics, two different ointments including steriod treatment. Nothing happened, and it was still red/inflammed/and a bump like something bit me. It was five months down the road when I found out about Epsom Salt. Heat up a half mixture of salt and water, do warm compresses with it, and then massage the area. I used a q-tip to apply pressure for about a minute two times a day. Two weeks later (now) there's no redness, but only a very very tiny bump that is scar tissue. I am continuing use of the Epsom salt for an additional two weeks to fully ensure it is gone. This method works for even old stubborn styes like mine! The last specialist also recommended flax seed oil supplements to help regulate oil production. I started that too, to help prevent one from coming back. Good lulck!

An old folk remedy is to use the very first Urine of the day. Use a cotton ball to clean around the eye and then wash your face as normal. Grow up this is not tongue in cheek so grow up and try it. If it works for you then pass it forward

This article states that "a very common underlying cause of styes is blepharitis." That's not true. Blepharitis is not common, and it's more often a complication of styes than a cause of them.
The tea bag treatment listed here may work better than hot compresses (washcloths). It's a widely used and well-recognized treatment.
Some of the other treatments are absolute nonsense.
I'd use over-the-counter medication (eye ointment) with both hot compresses and tea bags. And SEE YOUR DOCTOR if that hasn't begun to work after several days.
Having your doctor lance the stye is an effective treatment, but only after the top part of the stye has become hard.
