All medical students and physicians should be trained in nutrition and physical activity to help combat America’s growing obesity challenge. That’s the message of a new white paper Teaching Nutrition and Physical Activity in Medical School: Training Doctors for Prevention-Oriented Care released today by the Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC), the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the Alliance for a Healthier Generation (Alliance) at the Institute of Medicine’s Roundtable on Obesity Solutions. 

The Warriors and Gold Alliance partner Jawbone are partnering with the Alliance for a Healthier Generation for a one week health and fitness challenge starting Tuesday, May 20 at Sheridan Elementary School in San Francisco

Alliance for a Healthier Generation Announces 2013-2014 Youth Advisory Board

The Alliance for a Healthier Generation, a national nonprofit working to reduce the prevalence of childhood obesity, has named Dr. Howell Wechsler to serve as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), effective today.

Researchers from Emory’s Rollins School of Public Health collaborated with the Alliance for a Healthier Generation to evaluate and report findings from their Healthier Generation Benefit, in which the national non-profit organization joined forces with private health insurance companies and large self-insured employers to expand health insurance coverage for the prevention, assessment, and treatment of childhood obesity.

The Alliance for a Healthier Generation is thrilled to be a part of the Let’s Move! Active Schools initiative, announced by the First Lady of the United States today. The Alliance will serve as a Managing Partner to the new initiative, which aims to engage 50,000 schools across the country to deepen their policies and practices to assure students get 60 minutes of physical activity each day before, during and after school.

The Alliance for a Healthier Generation applauds the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) today, in the release of the proposed national nutrition standards for snack foods and beverages sold in school as result of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. These standards will address items that are typically sold in vending machines, a la carte lines (items sold individually in the cafeteria), and school stores.

The book’s foreword is written by President Bill Clinton.

In celebration of October’s National School Lunch Week, the Alliance for a Healthier Generation (Alliance), the School Nutrition Association (SNA) and the Yum-o! organization have announced Donnie Barclift from Oakland Unified School District as the winner of Rachael Ray’s Yum-o! Healthy School Lunch Contest with his recipe for Pozole con Pescado.

While the recipe for fighting childhood obesity is long and complex, many public health experts agree on a good first step: encourage kids to reduce their intake of sugary beverages and instead drink more water.

Have you ever been taken off guard by a child’s question about weight?  Many parents struggle with what to say and how to say it.  In fact, a WebMD/Sanford Health survey found that parents of teens find it more difficult to talk about weight with their child than talking about sex, drugs, alcohol or smoking.  Experts at the Strategies to Overcome and Prevent (STOP) Obesity Alliance and the Alliance for a Healthier Generation (Alliance) say the issue is compounded by the fact that there are limited resources to help parents respond to children’s questions about weight.  To help, STOP and the Alliance have developed a free conversation guide that offers parents “real-world” situations and plain language responses to questions about weight issues including understanding BMI, body image, bullying, weight bias and family obesity. 

The Alliance for a Healthier Generation today announced the expansion of its board of directors and the election of the new chairman for the 2012-2013 term

The Alliance for a Healthier Generation today honored 18 school leaders from across the country for their diligence in creating healthy school environments for students and staff. The honorees, which include school superintendents, principals, physical education and health teachers, food service directors, district wellness specialists and parents, have been selected to serve as part of the Alliance’s National Champions Network, an expert team that helps schools improve access to healthy food and beverages and daily physical activity.

Running one marathon and raising $44,000 wasn’t enough for celebrity chef Richard Blais. Instead, Blais has committed to returning to lead a team of 35 marathoners to raise funds in support of the Alliance for a Healthier Generation and the William J. Clinton Foundation in the 2012 ING New York City Marathon.  This year, Blais is joined by award-winning journalist, best-selling author and financial editor for NBC’s Today,Jean Chatzky, who will co-captain the team.

With 1 in 3 kids in America overweight or obese, Chef Lorena Garcia is determined to do her part to end the epidemic. Garcia is one of 12 competing chefs on “Top Chef Masters” and her selected charity partner is the Alliance for a Healthier Generation. Every American has a role to play and this season, for Garcia, its raising money in support of the fight against childhood obesity – in homes, schools and communities.

Expanding efforts to serve healthier meals at more affordable prices the Alliance for a Healthier Generation is announcing ConAgra Foods, ARYZTA, Horizon Software International and NutriKids have joined the effort to combat childhood obesity. The four companies have signed voluntary agreements to help increase the availability of healthy school meal products and technology to help schools serve healthier meals to millions of students in the United States.

The Holualoa Tucson Marathon, in its 19th year, announces the Alliance for a Healthier Generation as the official national charity of the 2012 Tucson Marathon and Tucson Marathon Family Fitness Fest.  This collaboration will promote health, fitness and education with a focus on childhood obesity.

Sanofi US (Sanofi) and the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, a non-profit organization founded by the American Heart Association and the William J. Clinton Foundation, today announced a new model for the private sector to combat childhood obesity. Sanofi pledged $800,000 to support the Alliance’s work supporting healthy schools in the company’s home state of New Jersey, and commits to provide preventative childhood obesity healthcare benefits to all of its employees.
