How to Visually Recognize a Rising Star Article on wikiHow
Edited by Chris, Mike, Adelaide, Serendipitee and 1 other
Deciphering whether or not a solitary article in New Article Boost may be tricky. However, if you're willing to test yourself, you can easily visualize what makes an article of such a quality.
EditSteps
-
1Open your web browser and visit the wikiHow website.Ad
-
2Become a New Article Booster on wikiHow, if you aren't already one.
-
3Open the article.
-
4Look at the title. Ask yourself: Does the title look visually okay; Is it visually appealing; Is it able to be quickly searched for the best information?
-
5Think about topics of current society. Ask yourself: Is this topic a topic of current interest or is it something that most people should know?
-
6Make sure the article doesn't go against wikiHow's deletion policy or merge policy.
-
7Make sure there are no copyright violations. You can check for them in NAB by clicking on "Check," or by performing a Google test.
-
8Look at the article to see if it has been categorized. If it has been assigned to a category, you'll most likely find the category directly beneath the introduction and immediately above the Steps section heading.
-
9Look at the Steps for the article. Ask yourself if there are enough steps for a reader to properly understand the topic. If yes, keep reading. If no, add some steps and then reconsider from this point forward.
- A small number of steps may be adequate for some topics, but for others, it may take many steps.
-
10Consider the formatting of the article. Ask yourself: Are most of these steps in the correct wikiHow format; Does each Step begin with an action verb?
-
11Boost the article. Add any missing steps that are critical to the article.
-
12Look at the article's Related wikiHows section. Ask yourself: How many articles have been linked to the article via the Related wikiHows section? As long as there are a two or three linked articles that are fairly closely related by title, that is enough for the Rising Star designation. Even if the article you are considering has only one related, that will work (as long as it is a good, valid related).
-
13Examine the article for templates which indicate that additional work need to be done on the article. Templates such as an article needing step-by-step pictures, illustrations or screenshots do not absolutely have to be addressed at this time and it is OK to leave these tags in place. Most other issues (highlighted by tags such as {{format}}, {{stub}}, {{copyedit}}, {{cleanup}} and several others)should be addressed and the template removed prior to marking as a Rising Star.
-
14Consider the overall strength of the article. If it is a bit weak without images, consider strengthening the article by adding these before considering the possibility of a Rising Star.
-
15Finalize your decision. If you have answered yes to most of the questions in the above steps (at least 85-90% yeses), you are probably looking at a Rising Star.
-
16Double check your thinking by viewing the Discussion page. If there is a Rising Star template, you have corroborated your conclusion.-- Someone else feels that this article is of exceptionally high quality.
- If you are in NAB and feel that you are looking at a high quality article, then mark the article as a Rising Star and don't second guess yourself.

EditTips
- In your message to the editor, mention that the article was chosen to be "one of the better articles on wikiHow". Many new editors may not understand wikiHow policies and terminology yet. Don't just leave it up to the auto-message to notify these authors that their work has been selected.
- A list of all the Rising Stars is automatically maintained and will be updated once you select the rising star option from the NAB app.
- If you have the Rising Star feed on your wikiHow Watchlist, upon marking an article as a new Rising Star, sometimes the New Article Boost app messes up. It sometimes sends back the next page as the Rising Star feed. Be very careful! If you scroll down to the bottom when it does it, you'll see the app unwatched this page on your settings. Be sure to add the page back to your Watchlist, each and every time you want to add one there (if it displays). Otherwise, this page will display at the correct times.
- This article is especially useful for those wanting to become a New Article Booster and are ready for the editing test (part three of the NAB process). Krystle, wikiHow's Community Support Leader/Moderator, will ask you what articles you feel should be marked as Rising Stars and this article provides the guidance you will need.
- There is also a Twitter account that you can follow that allows you to see a running tally of Rising Star articles as they are marked. Follow the wHrisingstars account on Twitter.
- If you encounter an article that someone neglected to designate as a Rising Star, you can add them manually by using this page. Don't forget to leave the original author a note letting them know that their article has been selected to be a Rising Star, though.[1]
- The feed for Rising Stars shows up in two places: on the side rail when using the the Answer Requests app and at the very bottom of the main portion of the page labelled "New Articles".[2]
- When an article gets a Rising Star, a template is placed on the discussion page for the article and on the user_talk page so the author gets a message saying he or she has a Rising Star. A green star will also be placed on the user page beside the article (under the Articles Started heading), but only if the option to display Articles Started has been selected by the user.
- Once an article is marked as a Rising Star it will always carry that designation so it is important to accurately designate those articles that are worthy of Rising Stars and only those articles that are worthy.
- Just because all sections have been fully filled out, doesn't mean that the article is worthy of a Rising Star. It's the quality of this information that can lead you to a better decision.
EditWarnings
- All articles have the ability to become Rising Stars, however only certain articles will achieve this distinction. If you feel that your article didn't get fair treatment, contact the person who boosted the article to find out why they didn't give it a Rising Star. You may need to provide details of why you would have felt it deserved that distinction had you been in the position of New Article Booster.
- Even short articles can be boosted, make a complete turnaround, and become a Rising Star. Accept that as a compliment to you having picked a worthy topic and having given it a good start. Also, don't look at your oversights as a negative, but as a learning experience.
- Don't ever RS one of your own articles. It's a conflict of interest. Let another Admin or Booster decide whether your article is worthy enough to get this designation.
