Did you know?Brazil is the fifth largest country in the world by size and population. Although the Brazilian economy is growing rapidly, 15% of the population lives in absolute poverty – with no access to basic housing, nutrition and healthcare. The Brazilian government has taken steps to tackle extreme poverty and the inequalities in health throughout the country by passing legislation to provide free medication for everyone suffering from high blood pressure or diabetes. The drugs are to be distributed through a nationwide network of budget pharmacies, where many medicines are already heavily subsidised. About 33 million Brazilians have high blood pressure, and more than 7 million have diabetes. It is estimated that more than 80,000 deaths per year (10 every hour) are due to the disease. |
