Two Methods:Everything but NFD|dupArticles with NFD|Dup

Have you seen the NFD (Nominated for Deletion) template on an article? If so, you might want to help out with processing NFD articles. It is known that regular users can vote on NFD discussion pages, but if you have NAB/admin rights, you can use a tool called NFD Guardian to help vote on NFD articles.

    Become a new article booster, or become an admin. If you did not know the Deletion Policy already when you attempted to become an admin or booster, learn it. It is a key element to this app.

    Select the "Start" button on the NFD Guardian app. A direct link to the app can be found here.

    • Wait for the app to load. You'll see several boxes in the areas, along with several link buttons.

EditMethod 1 of 2: Everything but NFD|dup

    Look at the title of the article you have requested to either delete or keep. See if you can fully understand the title.

    Look down at the line labelled Article Info, which has a link to "discussion page".

    • Read to yourself the number of discussion page comments that exist for the given article. You'll need it later; if there are any more than 15 messages, the app will give you an alert if it thinks you haven't viewed them yet)

    Peruse the line labelled NFD Reason. This will give you an approximate idea of what type of information you are looking for in the article. "Duplicate" has a few additional pieces you'll need to look after, but if you trust other people's instincts, it can be easy for you to discern.

    Read over the article. Look for missing data, or points that lead you to vote the correct way.

    Click the "Vote to Delete" button to request that the article to be deleted.

    Click the "Edit to Save" button. In this window, you the article to see if you can fix it enough, to be able to remove the template. Be prepared to make drastic changes; enough to make the article of usable quality.

    • Upon saving, you'll be asked whether you feel confident enough, that the edit you've made would be enough to remove the NFD template yourself. Click the "Yes" button, if you feel you've made the article strong enough to remove the NFD. If you're rather reluctant to know whether it's good enough, select "No" on this box. However, being an Admin or New Article Booster yourself, you are expected to know when the article is good enough for removal.

    Look at the NFD Votes line. This line gives you pre-existing vote tallies, along with who voted in with what type.
    • Realize that it takes at least one admin vote to completely delete the article, or have the NFD template removed from the article.

    Try not to vote the same way as others do, just because these users voted on them. You may feel differently on a few. Always make sure that your votes are justified to the wikiHow Deletion Policy in some way. The very last line of the display explains who decided to keep the article, along with who decided to delete the article.

EditMethod 2 of 2: Articles with NFD|Dup

    Recognize that you'll have to go through a few more clicks to get these to display. They will only be displayed if you change the settings, since they are not included in the "all" option. [1]
    • Click the "Change Settings" button up above and slightly to the right of the article's title.
    • Click the drop-down arrow next to "Select NFD type".
    • Select the "dup" option.
    • Click the "Done" button.

    Look at the title of the article you'll need to decide needs to be deleted.

    Look at the title that may or may not be the dup. You'll find this article name as the last link inside the NFD Reason line. Try and determine how these two relate to one another. Consult the Merge Policy if you're not sure whether they are a duplicate or not. Deletable duplicates will always be based primarily on titles and titles only; never on content alone.[2]
    • It's also important to check the article history and discussion page. If the NFD template has been entered incorrectly, or changed since it was first added, it may not display correctly in NFD Guardian. Checking the edit history will help you to see if that's the case.

    Click the "Vote to Delete" button to ask for the article to be deleted. Once the article's been "deleted" the original title will become a redirect forced onto the article in the NFD Reason line.

    Click the "Vote to Keep" button to request that the article be kept. In this case, once the proper votes have yielded an answer, the NFD template will then be removed.

  • A list of the different articles that have been tagged as NFD's are listed as groups on Category:Nominations for Deletion.
  • If using Internet Explorer and wanting to display the discussion page, you'll need to right-click the article's title from the top left of the app, choose to open it in another tab or window, and click the discussion page from the article, as you would have with any other article.
  • On rare occasions, it may be necessary for a NFD|dup template to undergo a merge instead. Read the article it suggests it could be a duplicate of. Read both the article and the other article. Sometimes it may be enough to just compare titles per the wikiHow:Title Policy and wikiHow:Merge Policy along with the wikiHow:Deletion Policy.

    If you'd like to sort through the app NFD tags individually (all nfd|dup will be grouped together, and then nfd|not together, etc., the "Change Options" button at the top of the page, can help you sort down those choices. Select the three letter code from the drop-down select click the "Done" button. Review the queue.
  • If you should ever come across an article where the reason would have yielded a Keep, but another reason would have yielded a Delete, open up the article and edit it's NFD tag to replicate the corrected reason.
  • There is very little call for editing an article with an NFD|dup tag, unless know of a better article title that the NFD dup link can link to, or shouldn't even have been nominated for dup but should have been nominated for something entirely else.
  • If you ever mistakenly delete an article thanks to an admin voting and other votes yielded a delete, contact an admin. They may have other questions why you think the article should be re-instated to it's former self. If the tag got removed, and you reconsidered, it's easy to re-nominate it (but realize that by doing this, the article won't go through NFD Guardian again, but will go through the NFD Guardian Advanced list instead.
  • Note that an admin vote is not required for the NFD tag to be removed. It is only required with deletion. If at least three boosters (that are not admins) vote for the article to be kept, the NFD tag is removed.

  • This app will only open the vote after 7-10 days have elapsed with the NFD template still on the article[3].
  • Any article with an {{inuse|date=~~#}} tag will not go into the NFD Guardian tool. If it has an NFD tag and the {{inuse|date=~~#}} tag is removed, it will then go into the NFD Guardian tool.[4]
  • Any article that is restored after it has been deleted will avoid the NFD Guardian tool in the future (if it is nominated for deletion again) and will go into the NFDAdvanced page instead.[5]
