Drawing with charcoal is one of the expressive and detailed ways of drawing; also, it's a very sensitive material to use that can make your art work look attractive and full of feelings.

    Get the materials: Getting the right materials is one of the most important steps to product good drawings. Materials can save you a lot of time and energy, so you need to be careful and choose good quality materials. You need drawing paper, charcoal, and two kinds of erasers an art gum erasers for large areas. Also, do not forget kneaded erasers where you use kneaded to help you blend charcoal and produced a different shades of gray, and using kneaded erasers help to erase small particles spot in your draw. Some people use dry bread as an eraser and also to add some special touches.

    • Since charcoal is very messy element, you must be very careful as you are using charcoal, and do not touch your eyes until you wash your hand with soap.

    Use a perceptual grid: As you draw, use a perceptual grid tools where you support your straight- edge. Use the vertical axis, horizontal axis with a black wall or space behind the elements.

    Start with a sketch: Find your way on the paper by sketching out a helping guide to plan the location and size of each of the visual objects. In first five minutes, it's best to sketch the elements very lightly and jump quickly between elements, so you could develop all areas of the image simultaneously. As you are drawing, use the eraser if you need to fix and erase you mistakes.

    Add shades of gray: Be aware of the appearance of the light and dark tones. Shading is the step where adding life to your drawing, and since charcoal is the only color tool you are using, you have to blend shades of the gray color. In your draw, the light shade of gray must be used to show where the light reflects on the object; the dark shade of gray must be used where the shadow located. Don't forget that you can use your eraser to help create different shades of the gray, too.
