    Get the game. There are a few varieties of the game available online, but you can find the original version here.

    Move the tiles to play. On the desktop, you can use your arrow keys, and on a mobile device, you can swipe the number tiles up, down, left or right across the screen.
    • When you move a certain way, all of the tiles will slide that direction, unless there are other tiles blocking them. For example, if you swipe left or hit the left arrow key, all of the numbers will move left as far as they can go. At the same time, new numbers will appear on the playing field in random locations.

    Combine like tiles. When a move causes two tiles of the same number to hit each other, they merge into one. The resulting tile is the sum of their numbers. In other words, if you swipe so that two 2s hit each other, the result is a 4.

    Know the goal. The point of the game is to try to get a high tile of at least 2048 (hence the name). Even if you reach that milestone, you can keep going above there, too!

    Try a simple strategy. One basic approach is to alternate tapping up and right until you have no more options left (ie no squares move when you do so). Then tap left, before going back to alternating up/right. This won't guarantee you a win - in fact, it usually won't get you there. However, it can get you a fairly high score, and is a good place to start, if you're new to the game.[1]

    Focus on a corner. A common strategy among players is to build up a high number in one corner. It doesn't matter what corner you pick, but once you pick, stick with it.[2]
    • After you pick a corner, make sure the last row (top or bottom, depending on the corner you choose) is always full. Swipe all tiles up or down, accordingly, to build up high numbers in that row.
    • Move tiles towards the corner in order to build up the biggest number there.

    Use the "Mancini" technique (a fairly widely-adopted strategy, but one particular article refers to it by this name). This focuses on building chains of tiles to get a high number in a top corner of the field.[3]
    • Start by moving the tiles side to side, going to either the left or the right until you can't anymore, and then going the other way. The result should be a field of 2s, 4s, and 8s.
    • When you have a full field, start collapsing the numbers up towards the top. When possible, merge these numbers even higher into larger results.
    • Once you can't move up anymore, go back to moving left and right. As you go, pick a top corner to focus on, where you can build up a high number at the edge of the field.
    • Try to use chained actions to move a high number into the corner. This is particularly key for the tiles on your first and second rows: try to build a chain so that you can swipe left and right and finally upwards, resulting in a build-up to a high number in that corner.
    • Focus on gathering small numbers together to build this chain, rather than getting any one given tile to the biggest possible number. The chain reactions will get you much further than focusing on building one single tile higher by itself.
    • Keep up the pattern: work side to side to build small numbers together, then swipe up to collapse them into bigger tiles, and work towards your chosen "big" corner.

    Avoid swiping so that your highest number is towards the middle. If you've focused your attention on building high tiles at the top and in one top corner, do all you can to avoid swiping down. Likewise, if you picked a bottom corner, don't swipe up. Doing so will likely introduce a very low tile (a 2 or a 4) into the "high number" row: bad news.
    • If you have no other choice, you may have to swipe that way at some point, but do all you can to avoid it. If it happens, try to build a chain around it to pump it up into a higher number

  • Or every time you have to restart, go up, right, down left. And keep repeating that order until u get it.
