How to Get Over a Harry Potter Obsession
Edited by Oliver, Zach, Teresa, Jaybird1091 and 11 others
You know you have a Harry Potter obsession when you lose sleep over the books. Obsessed fans will often stay up and read a new Harry Potter book the night it is released because they don't want others to ruin the ending by leaking spoilers.
Were you a bit depressed after the seventh book was released? Don't let a Harry Potter obsession interfere with your life. Follow these steps to ease your obsession.
EditSteps
-
1Find all right books to read. That way you'll learn to enjoy other books, but they won't be extremely good, just, well, interesting. NOT the kind of books you'd want to re-read.Ad
-
2Devote more time to your studies or work.
-
3Get out more. Visit a mall, museum, or park with family or friends. Or, visit your local library. Books such as Tamora Pierce's, the Spiderwick Chronicles, Chronicles of Narnia, The Golden Compass, The Lord of the Rings, The Series of Unfortunate Events or the Septimus Heap series may be a good substitute as long as you don't obsess over them as well. See that book over there that nobody's ever heard of? Try it; it just might become the next big thing pretty soon.
-
4Put all of your extra editions of Harry Potter into a box, no matter how hard it may be, especially if they are written in a language you can not read. Store the box in a basement, closet, or attic, but protect them from the elements.
-
5Limit your visits to Harry Potter fan sites. Set a goal to spend only a certain amount of time there each day, then reduce that number gradually.
-
6Do not re-read any Harry Potter book, as this will only spark your obsession.
-
7Write your own fan fiction. Write atypical plots, and exclude the main characters, to further separate yourself from Harry Potter.
-
8Ask your family and friends for support. Request that they remind you when you start obsessing over Harry Potter, such as discussing the books, or viewing discussions about it online.
-
9Learn to enjoy Harry Potter as a spectator only. Reading the books and watching the movies should be a casual past-time, not an intense period of collecting Harry Potter trivia.
-
10Make new friends if yours are also obsessed with Harry Potter. This will help remove you from temptation that could rekindle your obsession.
-
11Just because you should stop being obsessed with Harry Potter does not mean you should stop liking Harry Potter. You can keep your Harry Potter merchandise, just don't talk about Harry Potter all the time. Talk about other things and only talk of Harry Potter when people ask you what your favorite book is.Ad
EditTips
- Do not become a Potter-hater in the process of addressing your obsession.
- Do not wear robes or cloaks in public.
- Do not read Twilight to cure yourself of your addiction. Twilight can be just as addicting and can sucker in Potter fans looking for something else to read because it is very popular. In reality Twilight could be much more addicting because it takes advantage of your feelings and hormones. Try not to read another popular series because you may become addicted to it as well.
- Do not buy a wand , wave it around in public and say spells. People will think you're crazy.
- Try an addiction or obsession Internet quiz. Do not take pride in your obsession scores.
- Stop buying Harry Potter merchandise.
EditWarnings
- Be patient with your friends, as they may not understand your desire to quit your obsession. At the same time, do not allow them to pull you back into this obsession.
