Main institution:
Hopital Universitaire Farhat Hached, Sousse (Tunisia)

Principal investigator:
Hassen Ghannem

Other investigators:
Jihene Maatoug; Imed Harrabi; Slim Slama; Nathalie Farpour-Lambert

Location of the project:
Sousse, Tunisia

Amount allocated:
USD 64.925

Date:
September 1, 2012 - September 1, 2014

Objectives:

Tunisia is facing an epidemiological transition and the prevalence of diabetes is dramatically increasing. This epidemic is developing in association with obesity, which represents an important risk factor of type 2 diabetes. Indeed, childhood obesity constitutes now a major public health challenge in Tunisia and worldwide.

Therefore, we propose to implement and evaluate a school-based intervention to manage overweight and obesity among school adolescents in the region of Sousse, Tunisia. This will be a one-year behavioral intervention that will include nutritional, physical activity and psychological components.

BRIDGES (Bringing Research in Diabetes to Global Environments and Systems) is a programme initiated by the International Diabetes Federation [2], and supported by an educational grant from Lilly Diabetes.
