Diabetes and Endocrine Centre

  1. History, team and infrastructure
    1. Established in 1984, the CUHK-PWH Diabetes and Endocrine Centre is run by 100 medical and care professionals, research scientists and supporting staff including 16 endocrinologists, 1 nurse consultant, 4 nurse specialists engaged in education, care and research activities in diabetes.
    2. Our research, education and care facilities are located in the PWH, the teaching hospital of CUHK, serving a 1 million population with 1300 beds and annual service capacity of 150,000 emergency room attendance, 126,000 hospitalizations, 6,500 deliveries, 43,000 surgeries and 605,000 specialist outpatient attendance in 2009-2010.

  3. Our mission
    1. To prevent and control diabetes through patient and professional education.
    2. To promote the use of disease registry and interdisciplinary care augmented by peer support to translate evidence to practice and to influence policy.
    3. To raise awareness and detect early diabetes using a proactive and empowering approach.
    4. To advocate for policy change to strengthen the health care system to facilitate evidence-based interdisciplinary care
    5. To advance our understanding of diabetes and discover novel prevention and treatment strategies through basic, clinical and applied research.
  4. Our structure: The CUHK-PWH Diabetes and Endocrine Centre is made up of 6 units affiliated to CUHK and PWH with complementary functions.
    1. PWH Diabetes and Endocrine Centre;
      1. provide regular comprehensive risk assessment, education and empowerment programmes to inpatients and outpatients with diabetes;
      2. provide peer leadership training and peer support programs to complement interdisciplinary care;
      3. provide training courses/workshops to health professionals within and outside Hong Kong, notably China;
      4. support primary and other care teams to integrate diabetes and chronic care in both community and hospital settings and in private and public sectors; and
      5. influence policy change through research and ongoing evaluation of all assessment, education and treatment programmes.
    2. CUHK Hong Kong Institute of Diabetes and Obesity (HKIDO)
      1. organize the annual Diabetes East Meets West Symposium with an annual attendance of over 700 local and overseas delegates;
      2. organize CUHK biannual Certificate, Diploma and Master Courses in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Obesity which have trained over 1000 care professionals; and
      3. organize local, international and regional meetings/workshops in collaboration with other academic institutions and professional bodies on topics related to basic science, clinical research and care delivery.
    3. CUHK Diabetes Clinical Research Centre:
      1. conduct phase 2-4 clinical trials of novel compounds and devices to address unmet needs in diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular and renal diseases;
      2. design, conduct, coordinate and evaluate local, regional and international epidemiological studies including gestational diabetes, childhood obesity, young-onset diabetes and diabetes associated comorbidities; and
      3. conduct investigator-initiated interventional studies, both pharmacological and non-pharmacological based, to prevent and control diabetes and comorbidities.
    4. CUHK Yao Chung Kit Diabetes Assessment Centre;
      1. a non-profit nurse-led community-based diabetes assessment and education centre that supports interdisciplianry care; and
      2. implement proof-of-concept community-based disease awareness, early detection, prevention, collaborative care and peer support programs for translation to practice.
    5. Asia Diabetes Foundation: a charitable organization under CUHK Foundation;
      1. design, conduct, coordinate and evaluate collaborative projects in the region including the establishment of an Asia Diabetes Database using a web-based Joint Asia Diabetes Evaluation (JADE) Program which incorporates a validated risk engine, care protocols, feedback tools and decision support;
      2. advocate for the urgent need to change practice environment to empower patients through self care and peer support and facilitate delivery of team-based care.
    6. CUHK Diabetes Research Laboratory, Li Ka Shing Institute of Health Science:
      1. conduct basic science research projects to study disease mechanisms focusing on applied and functional genomics as well as beta/stem cell biology;
      2. conduct large scale molecular epidemiology programs to develop risk algorithms including genetic information to motivate behavioral changes and personalize care as well as develop economic models to assess the cost-effectiveness of such programmes.
