The Convention Secretariat congratulates Gabon on becoming the third Party to the Protocol to Eliminate Illicit Trade in Tobacco Products
On 1 October, Gabon deposited its instrument of acceptance of the Protocol to Eliminate Illicit Trade in Tobacco Products. The Convention Secretariat would like to congratulate Gabon on becoming the third Party to the Protocol, following Nicaragua and Uruguay. The first protocol to the WHO FCTC is open for ratification, acceptance, approval, formal confirmation or accession by all WHO FCTC Parties. It will enter into force upon ratification by 40 Parties.
Head of the Convention Secretariat strongly supports 100% smoke-free Tokyo
A delegation from Japan, led by Mr Shigefumi Matsuzawa, member of the House of Councillors, met Dr Vera da Costa e Silva, Head of the Convention Secretariat, on 16 September 2014. The meeting took place in the context of the recent announcement by the Governor of Tokyo, Yoichi Masuzoe, that a smoke-free ordinance will be implemented in Tokyo before the 2020 Summer Olympic Games.
Another successful joint needs assessment in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic
The Convention Secretariat, together with WHO, the Government of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic and the Southeast Asia Tobacco Control Alliance, conducted a joint needs assessment mission on 8–12 September 2014. This mission was made possible through funding by the European Union.
