EditSteps
-
1Start by gathering all the necessary utensils.
- Big sheets of paper to draw the pattern on (preferably an A1 size, or multiple A3/Ledger or A4/Letter taped together to form a bigger sheet), smaller sheets of paper to sketch the bag and the pattern layout, a ruler, a duct tape roll, a pencil, a razor, gum and a pair of scissors for cutting out the pattern.
-
2Sketch out the messenger bag and write the sizes of each part of the bag.
- Here you have as an example a standard size:
Body: Height-30cm (11.8); Width-35cm (13.7).
Lid: Height-20cm (7.8); Width-33cm (13).
Strap: Height-109cm (43); Width-5cm (2). - You can change the sizes as you wish, these are just as an example.

3Now sketch down on another smaller sheet the layout of the pattern. This will help you know how to draw it on the bigger sheet.
- Write the size on each piece of the pattern. Add 1-2cm (0.5-1) to have space for the seam.
- For the strap you need to double the width because it has to be folded in two when sewn.
- For the lid double the height because it has to be folded in two when sewn.
-
4Carefully draw each piece of the pattern on the bigger sheet following the previous two smaller sketches as reference.
- Use the ruler to calculate the height and width of the pattern.
-
5Cut out the drawn pattern and use it when you wish to make a messenger bag.
- Sew the pattern along the dotted line.
