How to Feel Comfortable Undressing at the Doctor's Office
Undressing at the doctor's office can be intimidating for the first time, but if you relax your mind and trust in the doctor's professionalism, you can handle it. Doctors see thousands of naked bodies, both male and female, in their line of duty, and it is only your own inhibition that makes you apprehensive.

-
1Remind yourself that doctors are professionals. They're not examining you out of sexual interest. They are only impersonally examining you for diagnosis of a disease, injury or infection.Ad
-
2Get comfortable with the procedures ahead of time. Watch a few videos online to familiarize yourself with the medical examination process.
-
3Talk to a few friends or relatives about your upcoming doctor visit and possible nude physical examination. If you are comfortable, ask someone you trust to accompany you.
-
4Remember to take a shower. Shave and trim your pubic/underarm hair, if desired. Unruly pubic hair or body odor can be embarrassing to you, but remember that the doctor is used to seeing all kinds of bodies and types; don't let it worry you.
-
5Ask the doctor if it is possible to use a surgical gown for examination, or cover you with a sheet if you are lying down. This may or may not always be feasible and it is best to leave the final decision to the doctor.
-
6Ask for a person of the same gender to be present, if desired. If you are a female being examined by a male doctor and you need to undress completely, you can request for a female nurse to be present. If no female nurse is available at that time, you may ask for a new appointment or an alternate doctor. Usually this is unnecessary, but you have a right to feel secure.
-
7Don't be embarrassed by biological reactions. If you are a male being examined by a female doctor, try not to stare. There is a remote possibility of being aroused. If it happens, do not be embarrassed. Female doctors are used to this phenomenon happening occasionally. Just grin and forget about it.
-
8Try to relax through the uncomfortable parts. Examination of body cavities like the anus or vagina (pelvic examination) can be specially uncomfortable for a few moments. Take a few deep breaths just before the examination.
-
9Close your eyes, if you want to. Some people find this helps them to relax. Remember, it will be finished soon and you may smile later at your own discomfort.Ad
