How to Be a Fun Flatmate
Five Methods:Games nightsHave a meal togetherGo out togetherExercise togetherShare jokes
Being a flatmate isn't all about washing dishes and arguing over whose turn it is to put out the garbage this week. Having fun with flatmates is a really cool thing to aim for!
EditSteps
EditMethod 1 of 5: Games nights
-
1Keep a stash of fun things to do somewhere in the flat. Fill it with board games, card games, word games, etc. Also have multi-player electronic games available.Ad
-
2Find out what your flatmates' favorite snacks and drinks are. Stock up on those and keep them in a special snack place.
-
3Find a time when all your flatmates are free to get together once a week. Make that games night. Get out the games and decide what you'll play together. Set out the snacks and drinks. And get stuck into it!
-
4Do a crossword together. Keep your weekly local newspaper. Local newspapers often have a fun crossword to do. The crossword is a great thing to do with the flatmates, as it keeps your brain active and working together makes solving the crossword easier and more fun. Once you've done the crossword, the paper can be used to start your fire for your cozy flat movie nights.
EditMethod 2 of 5: Have a meal together
-
1Try to have a regular-meal time-slot at least once a week. Use this time to have an elaborate and enjoyable meal that you take turns preparing. Even better, always prepare it together or in teams.
-
2Share fine wine, chocolate, cheese, and other gourmet delights. Have tastings and compare notes.
-
3Spend the night in quality conversation, enjoying one another's company and sharing stories about your lives (and loves!).

EditTips
- It's a really good idea to interview potential flatmates with all existing flatmates and to primarily look for personality fit. If you interview someone who displays warning signs of a bad personality fit, remember that it's sometimes hard to have fun with a flatmate whose personality doesn't fit your group. Then again, there are some great people who don't interview well but will warm up to the group once they are "in."
- Be respectful. Even if you have a great personality, a flatmate who constantly plays loud music or television, who doesn't help with daily tasks like dishes, who constantly borrows money (and never pays it back), etc. will quickly become tiresome rather than fun.
EditWarnings
- Flatmates won't always want to be "having fun". Choose the time sensibly and allow for plenty of down time, as well as giving each other space.
