How to Change an Acer Netbook's Function Key Popup Display
Do you have an Acer netbook? Dislike the standard pictures that come up when you adjust the volume or set the output to an external monitor? This will fix that!
EditSteps
-
1Turn on your netbook and log in.Ad
-
2Click the Start button then hit My Computer.
-
3Click on the hard drive labelled "ACER" or "C:". This is your hard drive, where most files are stored.
-
4Scroll down until you see a folder called "Program Files". This is where programs, like Firefox and Google Chrome, store their data.
-
5Look for a folder called "Launch Manager". This folder has all the data for the popup display that appears when you push Fn and another key.
-
6Inside "Launch Manager", there will be two folders of interest. MMRes and OSDRC. MMRes has the pictures for when you switch to an external monitor. OSDRC has the pictures for everything else, like when you adjust the volume [Fn + Up/Down] or when you turn the TouchPad on and off [Fn + F7].
-
7When you find the picture in the folder you want to change, first make a copy. If the picture was called "Mute", make a copy and call it "Mute-2". Edit the one called "Mute" because that is the one the program will look for.
-
8Open the picture you want to modify in an image editor other than Paint. Paint.NET, gimp and PhotoShop are good examples.
-
9Recolor or change the picture in whichever way you want.
-
10Save the picture as the original name. In this case, "Mute".
-
11When you are done, make sure there is a backup copy of the original pictures and that everything is saved. Close the folder.
-
12Go to Task Manager [Ctrl + Shift + Esc] and go to the "Processes" tab. Look for the process called "LManager". That is the program that makes the icons pop up. Click on "LManager" then click End Task. Now got to the "Applications" tab and click New Task. Type in "lmanager.exe" into the box. Hit OK or Enter.
-
13Try out the Fn key again and enjoy your new pictures!Ad
EditTips
- Use bright colors when recoloring. Unless you are good at making the colors fade away, use really bright colors. Using a dark color will make it look pixelated. Using brighter colors makes the pixelation harder to see.
- Always make a backup of the pictures.
- If you mess up badly and didn't make a backup, don't panic. Go to Acer's site and go to support. Hit driver download. Click netbook, then the type of netbook, Aspire ONE or Ferrari ONE. The model number is usually AO#### for the Aspires and FO#### for the Ferraris. You can find the number on the bottom of your netbook. By "Operating System", pick your OS. Go to the Applications tab. Scroll down until you see something called "LaunchManager Application". Download that. Once you extract the folder, all the original pictures will be in there in case you mess up.
- This time, MAKE A BACKUP.
EditWarnings
- Always make a backup of the pictures!!!! If you screw up the one without the -2, in this case "Mute", then delete it. Rename the one with the -2, in this case "Mute-2" to "Mute". Make another copy and try again.
- Use the UNDO button in case of a mistake.
EditThings You'll Need
- An Acer Netbook running Windows
- An image editor, not Paint
- Spare time
