A UPC barcode primarily consists of two set of numbers, UPC Company Prefix and Item Numbers. The 12th digit is a calculated check digit so the UPC Company Prefix and Item Number of a UPC should always be 11 digits total. The UPC Company Prefix is assigned to companies by the GS1 US organization. There are some online companies which resell these number and they are duplicating UPC Company Prefixes. The large retailers mandate their suppliers provide proof of ownership since many small companies are misinformed by these resellers.
