How to Teach Someone to Hold a Fork Properly (U.S. Style)
Good manners aren't about impressing people (though they can impress your future spouse, in-laws, or boss). They are about appreciating our food, blessing our food and knowing that what we eat is a gift to us, given all that it takes to grow, market, and prepare what we eat.
Steps
-
1Teach which is the "naughty finger" and why it is only good for certain things and not for other things. That is, of course, the middle, or "third finger" here.Ad
-
2Teach how to balance the handle (out handle, not close to the pronged area) on the top of the "naughty finger." This is done by putting the handle of the fork on it, then taking the index finger and using it to hold the fork there.
-
3Teach what to do with their thumb. The thumb goes perpendicular to the handle of the fork, forming a threesome: naughty finger on bottom, index finger farthest away from you and thumb perpendicular.
-
4Finally, use pressure to keep them all in place.
-
5Now eat -- good food (hopefully), tasty food (if you are lucky), healthy food (if you are smart about your future).Ad

Tips
- These instructions are for right-handed people. If you are left-handed, which is about 15 percent of the U.S. population, according to studies from the early 80's, then you have two choices (as does a left-handed person in search of knitting or learning to bat): (1) learn to use your right hand anyway or (2) find a left-handed teacher.
