Walk quickly. If a potential rapist is following you, and you are moving along at a quick pace, you'll be harder to catch, and he may choose another target. Practice this anytime you are walking by outpacing those around you.

Warn your friend. If you are walking with someone, and you always should, and you think someone is a potential rapist, warn them. But you don't want to be too obvious and yell, "Rapist!" The potential rapist will catch on immediately and probably try to commit the crime quicker or cause you serious bodily harm. Instead, think of a random word that would not come up in a conversations (e.g. kazoo, flugelhorn, ocelot), something that you wouldn't normally say. To practice this randomly, say the word and walk as fast as you can and in this, teach your friend to speed up when someone says the word.

Keep to well lit and populated areas. If you must walk out at night alone, stay in areas where there are working street lights and houses and open shops nearby where many people are.

Keep pepper spray in your handbag. Brandish it at anyone who so much as whistles at you. Don't use it unless you feel seriously threatened, but by brandishing it occasionally, you'll more likely know where it is when you need it, and you will feel less inhibited about taking it out of your bag.

Wear a whistle around your neck. Practice blowing it for no reason at all. By practicing, you'll feel less inhibited about using it when you really need it.

Request a security escort. If you work in a building with a security detail, and you have to walk to your car after dark, request an escort. It's part of their job, and even if you don't feel threatened in the particular neighborhood that you work in, you'll feel less inhibited about asking if you've asked before.
  7. Practice Preventing a Rape Step 7.jpg
    7
Get to know the people in your neighborhood. There are many good reasons for knowing your neighbors.

Yell "Police!" Many people shout "Fire!" or "Rape!" without meaning, so yelling for the police is a good way to get someone's attention.

Provide Details.
Please be as detailed as possible in your explanation. Don't worry about formatting! We'll take care of it. For example:
Don't say: Eat more fats.
Do say: Add fats with some nutritional value to the foods you already eat. Try olive oil, butter, avocado, and mayonnaise.

EditTips

  • Always appear strong, even if you are weak and timid, act confidently and always appear strong. Rapists target people who appear vulnerable, not people who look like difficult targets.
  • Always carry a cell phone when you are walking in case of a potential rapist, that way you can be picked up from where you are.
  • Keep to streets and routes that you know, and refrain from taking short-cuts, especially at night.
  • Take self-defense classes, chances are the potential rapist will probably be a lot bigger than you are and you will need to know how to easily push him off you.
  • Make police friends, if you are known to have a police friend or many, chances are rapists won't likely target you.
  • Always walk with a friend. If you are alone, you are more likely to be targeted.
  • Don't look like a victim. To do this you must keep your head up and shoulders back.

EditWarnings

  • Don't wear headphones while walking alone in public, even on low volume. You will be distracted and not be able to hear footsteps.
  • If you feel that you are in imminent danger of being raped, do not fast walk, run! Run as fast as you can, drawing attention to yourself and get to the nearest police station or patrol. Make noise, otherwise no one can help you.
  • Take great care if carrying a weapon. You can get in a lot of trouble if you abuse such a privilege. Most jurisdictions will require a license to carry some types of weaponry.
