Many people have a home theater setup in which they want to keep their AV equipment in a cabinet out of sight. When you keep your AV equipment out of sight it is also going to be out of the range of your IR remote. Here are a few choices in how to extend your IR signal.

Many IR extender setups use 3.5mm cables in this tutorial however we are going to keep it simple and show you how to use an extender over HDMI.

Steps

  1. 1
Connect the InjectIR HDMI adapters to both ends of your HDMI cable. Either HDMI adapter can go on either side of the HDMI cable. However you will want to make sure the CEC/IR selector switches are set to “IR”

Next you will connect the InjectIR IR sensor cable (labeled Rx) to the TV side. Now position the sensor where it will have an unobstructed view to your remote control (best place is on top of the TV).
  3. 3
Now connect the InjectIR IR Emitter cable (labeled Tx) to the equipment (or AV) side. Position the emitter in front of your equipment. NOTE: The IR transmitter TX unit needs to be facing the front of your video equipment. If you place the transmitter unit in front of multiple devices, it can control multiple devices. Just make sure there is an unobstructed line of sight between the TX transmitter unit and the IR receiver on each device.
  4. 4
Finally just plug in the HDMI cable (with attached InjectIR adapters) into your TV and equipment. You are done.

IR over HDMI

Tips

  • This setup is great for those of you who have existing HDMI cables run from your cabinet to your TV. However if you are not using HDMI you can run a different kind of extender that uses 3.5mm cable as the extension.

Warnings

  • This is a single band emitter and will not work with systems requiring dual band frequency.
