How to Choose a Suitable Game for a Child
Do you have no idea what game to get a child for his/her birthday or some other celebration? Well, read on and you'll be able to buy him/her the perfect present.
EditSteps
-
1Talk to him/her. Find out what sort of games he/she likes to play. If a specific game is mentioned, great - you know what to get. If not, you can always ask what he/she might like, or just guess.Ad
-
2Do you want a board game, a game that requires electricity or a video game?
- If you want a video game, will it work on your games console?
-
3Look for games. Try internet shopping sites, or a high street store. Keep in mind what the child asked for throughout the process - there's no point in asking if you're not going to take the answers into consideration.
-
4Check the game rating. Make sure it is suitable for the child.
-
5Go for the more interactive games and toys for ages 6 to 8.
- Kits (science, magic, electrical circuits)
- Board games in junior versions (Kids of Catan, Kids of Carcassone, Quoridor Kid)
- Traditional games (Chess, Rummikub, Solitaire, Cards, Mancala, Marbles, etc.)
- Books (Dangerous Book for Boys, Daring Book for Girls, Beano annual)
-
6Know that teenagers and preteens are on the same level. Boys tend to want more sports related gifts, while girls tend to appreciate more fashion-oriented gifts. Of course, there are always variants.
- Fantasy (Agricola, Dungeons & Dragons, Talisman, Battleground: Crossbows and Catapults, Small World, Magic: The Gathering, Munchkin)
- Wargames (Risk, Stargrunt II, Space Hulk, Space Marine)
- Abstract strategy (Pentago, Abalone, Othello, Blokus, Quoridor)
-
7Find the best price. Different stores sell the same game at different prices, so compare many.
-
8Buy the game and give it to the child.Ad

EditTips
- You generally only need to check the game rating for video games. Most other types of games don't provide ratings.
- It's less about how old your kids are and more about how mature they are. Know what your children can handle and what they can't. If you think they're ready for a game for more adult content then allow them to play it and if you think maybe a teen rated game might be too much then don't let them play it. You know your kids, play to that.
