How to Stop Unwanted Behavior in Dogs
This article describes just one method of stopping unwanted behavior in dogs.
Steps
-
1Figure out what behavior you want the dog to do instead of the unwanted behavior, and train that behavior first.Ad
-
2When the dog partakes in the unwanted behavior, cue the correct behavior instead.
-
3If you cannot interrupt the unwanted behavior, try this.
-
4Fill a spray bottle with water. Every time your dog behaves unpleasantly, use the spray bottle to "shock" the dog and communicate that what he is doing is not right.
-
5Keep this bottle ready. Next time your dog partakes in the undesirable behavior, spray your dog and, if necessary, chase him. Spray him/her at least five times.
-
6When the dog startles and stops the unwanted behavior, immediately cue the desired alternative and make sure the dog derives some reward for doing it.
-
7Continue to follow the steps consistently. Over time, your dog will associate the undesirable behavior with the unpleasant sound (and fright) of the spray bottle.

Tips
- Stay consistent! If you do this one time your dog misbehaves, but not the next, your dog will not associate the unpleasant experience with the undesirable behavior.
Warnings
- If you have an older dog with an unknown history, you may want to make sure that this does not anger the dog. Some dogs that have been abused can become aggressive when confronted with sights or sounds that trigger flashbacks of abuse.
