US Army Psychological Operations demand as much physical and mental effort as any other Special Operations MOS (Military Occupational Specialty). This is a guide to become involved in one of the Army's most secretive, elite PSYOP units.

Join the US Army. Get a good score on the ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery). You will need to pass the Defense Language Aptitude Battery, which doesn't require fluency in any languages, just common sense. Make sure you have Psychological Operations Specialist (37F) for an enlisted soldier and Psychological Operations Officer (37) for a commissioned officer on your contract when you sign up. You will need a Secret or possibly Top Secret Security Clearance for these jobs, so make sure you apply. A criminal record of any sort will severely cripple your chances of achieving any type of Security Clearance.

Make sure you are physically and mentally prepared for "Boot Camp." Don't waste too much time lifting weights. Remember you're going to be a soldier, not an athlete. Do as many push-ups, pull-ups, and crunches/sit-ups as you can, and make sure to increase the number of repetition every week. Jog in the morning and sprint at night. Be sure to meet the Army's physical requirements. Go for long periods without sleep.

Prepare for AIT. Once you've finished "Boot Camp", get ready for AIT. Continue to exercise and utilize what you've learned so far. Along with Airborne School and whatever possible schools you will attend, you will spend most of your time at the John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School. There you will learn everything from the creation of propaganda, to guerrilla warfare, dissemination techniques and even foreign languages. The washout rate is unknown, but AIT for PSYOP is known to have the same standards as the Green Berets, which have a washout rate of 90%. If you graduate from AIT, then congrats! If you are in the Army Reserve, then you will be placed in USACAPOC(A) (United States Army Civil Affairs and Psychological Operations Command (Airborne)). If you are in the active duty Army then you will be placed in the 4th Psychological Operations Group (Airborne) under the US Army Special Operations Command.

Prepare to travel. You will have a lot of chances to travel the world and fight terrorism with your mind and weapon. Violence is everywhere, and you are there to change it.

  • You may discover things you never knew were possible.
  • Know that joining the military does not guarantee that you will end up with the job you want. It's up to the government to assign personnel to needed positions.
  • It is unknown what elite operations PSYOP soldiers are involved in, but many people believe they not only influence foreign countries, but take part in operations on our own soil.
