This is a simple explanation of  studio set build as practiced in the UK. There is much, much more to the practice and this should be treated as a simple outline of film construction. Various film industry health and safety factors apply depending on studios and locations.

EditSteps

  1. 1
First you'll need to build flats, these are 4mm or 6mm ply wood stapled to 2" by 1" frames or to 3" by 1" frames. Flats come in standards sizes of 8' by 4' or 9' by 4' usually with smaller sizes like 9' by 1' or by 2' to make up exact wall sizes. Flats are light strong and above all they are actually FLAT
  2. 2
Lay the flats on their faces butted up together until they make a complete wall. Nail them together every 2 feet (0.6 m) using wire nails but not driving the nails in fully, so you can get them out when you strike.
  3. 3
Across the full length, run L braces at 2 feet (0.6 m) and 6 feet (1.8 m) from the bottom made of 3" by 1" nailed in an L
  4. 4
Lift the wall up onto trestles at each corner, still facing down, then staple cotton duc (cotton canvas) along one edge, then pull tight to the opposite side and staple tight all round.
  5. 5
Stand up wall and use wooden braces and stage weights to stabilize, then paint the wall and allow to dry so that canvas pulls tight and flawless. A second coat of paint or wallpaper, skirting boards and picture rail and you're done.

Tips
Provide Details.
Please be as detailed as possible in your explanation. Don't worry about formatting! We'll take care of it. For example:
Don't say: Eat more fats.
Do say: Add fats with some nutritional value to the foods you already eat. Try olive oil, butter, avocado, and mayonnaise.

EditTips

  • Use a thin coat the first time as the cloth soaks it up.
  • Cloth is expensive in itself but the cheapest way to achieve a large perfect surface.

EditWarnings

  • Always use at least two people to handle sets and brace off all walls firmly.
  • Do not exceed safe lifting loads.
