How to Treat Plant Poisoning in Pets
Certain plants can be deadly to your cat. The list is long and although poinsettias are the most famous, they are by no means the deadliest or the most common. Lilies, found in many cut flower arrangements, cause irreversible kidney failure if action is not taken within minutes of ingestion.

EditSteps
-
1Call your local veterinary emergency clinic - always have this number posted in an easy to find location or programmed into your phone. Do not wait for your cat to become ill, at that point it may already be too late.
-
2Bring your cat and the offending plant to the hospital or do as the veterinary team instructs you to do at home.
EditTips
- Be aware of what plants and what parts of the plant are considered toxic. Avoid these plants in your garden and in your home.
- Keep your cat indoors.
- Inspect all cut flowers you receive and discard any you do not know to be safe. Cats are incredibly agile and creative and may well reach the plant you thought you had placed high enough or behind a safe barrier.
- Know the phone number for your veterinarian and after hours service.
- Always have a bottle of unexpired 3% peroxide in your home - you may need it to save your cat's life (your vet will tell you how).
- Tell your friends, neighbours, and flower shop about the danger of lilies.
